Title: Fool me once
Post by: Slim9797 on December 12, 2024, 12:35:58 pm
About a month ago me and a buddy were just piddling around the house, checkin cows and seeing what wildlife been passing through. Had sketch with us and as luck would have it we stumbled over a hog track. Sketched worked it over for a little in some pretty dry conditions later in the evening, and got him bayed in a spot we call “the hole” 95% of hogs that bay in the hole are going to be boars and you’re probably not gonna kill him in the hole. It’s just a horrible spot. He broke as we were trying to crawl through the tangled mess of old bulldozed cedar. Crossed about 10 yards in front of me and I took a pot shot at him I probably shouldn’t have, but I was all but out of light.

Me and Leeland sure thought I knocked him down in the back end. Sketch carried him a few hundred and bayed again. We got around and it was right at dark and sketch had gone quiet. Few minutes goes back she comes walking in and I kind of figured I had hit the hog good enough to kill him. He died on that last bay and she come out.

Well this morning I got up early, had a free day so figured I’d go make a loop in the bottom, look at some deer and check my 2 hog traps. Step out the front door a before 7 with just enough light I could see a hog crossing the wide open below my house, headed for the bottom, he was coming Out of some cut grain.

I let him make his crossing in peace, went and made my circle and come back and grabbed sketch and her 1.5 year old son Spoon. I put them down about 7:30 out in the open at the last fence I watch him cross.

They went to trailing, spoon will give a little mouth so I knew he was smelling him. They worked him about a half hour and spoon finally struck at about half a Mile. Sketch fell in and they bayed him in the hole again. As I headed to him he started walking on them. Took about a half hour but I finally knocked him down after a half hour and 400 yards of a walking bay later.

Spoon will do the one thing his momma won’t, and that is get under ones behind and pull hide. Today I believe that was the difference. Spoon is going to be a fine dog I believe, and he really track minded like his momma. Can’t wait to finish him out this spring.

Sounds like they did a good job for you. You’re gonna have to start feeding that pot locker from me some of those good tracks. I bet he takes right to it. You have a pile of those rascals you’re gonna be starting pretty quick.

I ain’t got my collars and everything here at home right now. All me and Tim’s stuff is together at the moment at his place or I sure was going to take king, but with deer season I just couldn’t risk him getting into something he shouldn’t or not being able to recall him if they went too far. I don’t personally care, but I’d hate to have to go upside a neighbors head because they think they own the deer around here.

I sat and fought with going to get him or going to kill the hog when they first showed bayed. This rascal probably would have put a few holes in him and spoon had I done that lol.

Spoon is really really close to being worth something in his own right. His hand is on the switch. Now we gotta flip it. King is next by gawd, and I have no doubt he is going to do the deal and do it well.

That spoon is a looker. If he gets to be to open for your pack, send him east. He should fit right in with my dogs. Nice boar.

Haha thank you Cajun. As he’s getting a little older he has quieted some. At 8 months old you kick him down he was just gonna bark to bark and every step. If my partner Tim had it his way spoon would have been gone long ago lol.  Now, he isn’t every step or even every other step, but he will make enough noise to tell you he’s trailing. And the sucker can run all day long and tomorrow.

I ever get in the position I don’t need him, I sure will holler. Would love some different opinion on these dogs.

You earned that one Slim, dogs did a good job. It's always fun when a young dog begins to contribute.
