Title: Board Members Hunt
Post by: Mike on May 01, 2008, 12:33:00 am
Several of us from the boards got together this evening for a quick hunt after work. Matt_aggie04, Circle C, Aladatrot, JML, Clay and myself had a good time and caught a good boar hog. He went 210# on the scales and had some real nice teeth.

Little bit of both Richard, me and Chris rode horses and all the other walked.  This was the first time I had ever rode a horse while hog hunting and I really liked it!  Mike has more pics that maybe we can get him and Sean to post of Chris dragging the hog out and all that good stuff, her are the pics that I took.  I might also add that it is a miracle none of us got bit by a snake yesterday, we must have seen at least ten water mocasins  :o

Matt and I were on horses. Mike, Clay, and Mandi were on the ground with the snakes. ;D

It was a good hunt, and good times, sure glad I was high up and out of striking distance. Probably saw 10 cotton mouths, a few pretty good sized ones.

Hog was real nice, pictures don't really do justice on his ivory.

Nice. That is how you take charge there ;). I think if i went i would have to of faked an ol football injury to get me on of them horses too ;D. You know i hunted once with a horse down in beumont on a HUGE 20k ranch and it was awsome to ride right on top and tie off and turn around and flip the hog and not take more than a couple steps ;D.

I figured circle was on the horse i can tell by the pics with him in them ;D He still looks dry and clean ;). Yea that was a good hog. Glad all the dogs were ok.

that was because you fell getting off the horse ;D. J/k I cant wait to go back to beumont and hunt off them horses again it was fun. My bulldog rode the sadle with me and it works great. Do yall have to just have a running catch dog when there is no one to lead?

I hunt with a RCD, but we have also led bulldogs while horseback. Just clip two leads together, and you have a long enough lead for the bulldog.

Sean where were you, sure missed out on a perfect video oppertunity. This hog bayed up in a fallen tree top with limbs about big around as a soccer ball it was almost like a tunnel. Caly and Mike cut the catchdogs loose and it was pretty cool watching them climb over the big limbs. Then when I got there and climbed on top of them I was a couple feet above them looking down, I laid down on a limb reached down and grabbed a leg about that time Mike made his way around the other side and got him flipped. It was pretty exciting hunt, your gonna have to teach mike how to use that camera. Lets do it again soon.

Great hog, and sounds like a fun time!  (Other than the snake part...I myself don't even like big worms!  ;)

I really admire the group you guys have.  Around here I always seem to have trouble finding people without dogs that want to come along, and then those that DO have their own dogs want to bring the whole kennel every time in the woods.  I just have never been able to make myself like hunting a bunch of dogs at a time.  Everyone bringing a dog or two is a lot more enjoyable in my opinion.  Sure looks like you guys are a bunch of good folks that are respectful of each other.

Congrats again on a great time in the woods!!

Bryant, we all have the same ideas about dogs and the way we hunt... it works out great.

We all invite each other to our different places and always ask the "host" what dogs to bring.

Bryant,

One thing that I have noticed in hunting with some other people, is  how competitive they are. It is either how good their dogs are, trash talking other dogs, every person for themselves while getting to the bay. Some of my good friends are like this, consequently, I do not hunt with them. Still my friends, but not hunting buds.

When we hunt, it is a group of friends in the woods. If we get a hog, that is icing on the cake. If a dog screws up, we recognize it, but we don't give the owner of that dog a bunch of crap ( if that did happen, I would not be able to hunt with them anymore  :o )  When heading to the bay, we try to make sure that people are not left behind getting up a creek bank, or some other obstacle.

On this particular hog, there were two parties that would have liked to take the hog home. No arguing, we figured that the person that guessed the weight closest would take home the hog. Worked well, no hurt feelings, and we loaded the hog up, and went out to dinner at the local Applebee's for another round of BS'ing ;D

That's what I'm talkin bout Circle C.  Some Apple B's  and a few icy mugs after a good hunt!!!

Sounds just the way it should be.  I have hunted with "those" type people also, and it's not nearly as enjoyable.  Sure I like a good dog, and nothing makes me swell up with pride more than when one really shines but the competitiveness can be left at the house.

When I'm in the woods with a group, conversation is seldom about my dogs.  I learned a long time ago that they can hear you talking about them and will try their darndest to make a liar out of you.  Best just to shut up and let them do their thing.  Actions speak louder than words anyway, right?  It's also hard to learn anything new if you're the one doing all the talking.

I'm going to pack up and make a hunt (invited or not  ;) ) with you guys sometime!  Just kidding...

You guys must also have a better way of hunting that I also really need to know about to stay clean enough to hit Applebee's.  If I were to walk into a place like that after being in the woods, they would have the law called thinking I just murdered someone.  Then again, I tend to fall down a lot.  Not my fauilt...friends say I was born with small feet!

Yeah it is pretty interesting how folks look at you when you walk in to a restaurant and you have blood on a white t-shirt and on your pants and you still have your spurs and boots on hahahaha.  In Small Town, Texas it is really not a big deal to walk into a cafe like that for lunch, heck most folks would probably ask you how many did you catch.  But the closer you get to the big city the stranger the looks get, go figure.

Matt

I am no stranger to receiving strange looks ;D

A couple weeks ago, I got hung up under a low hanging branch, and the back of my shirt was shredded. We all decided to go to lunch in town, well as I walk in, you can hear people asking their spouse, "what happened to him"  A couple of the people there know JML, so they asked him.  He told them, a hog almost got me.  You should have seen the look on their face after that.

   Bryant,
Any time you feel like making the drive, I will do what I can to set up a hunt. When it comes to falling, I wear a size 13-14 and I still fall. Usually face first in muddy water.

    GitDatHawg,
Are you posting from the bathroom?  Congrats on your recent nuptials, hope you had enough fun in Mexico to make the "revenge" wothwhile ;D

Matt,

I know just what your talking about small town vs. big city.  A few weeks ago we made a hunt one friday afternoon on a new landowners place that had called me about some rooting.  We ended up catching 12 hogs that evening and so we decided to stop at the local "cantina" for a celebratory toast if you will.  Mind you, this is in the BOONDOCKS!

We walked in that place, and after a few looks of "who are these guys...there not from these parts", we almost immediately gained celebrity status when they figured out what we were about.  Drinks on the house...the whole bit.

In the city, we would have been thrown in the pokey the way we looked...guilty until proven innocent!

Circle C-  I'll sure take you up on that one of these days.  With the price of diesel, I may have to take a second mortgage to get there.   I have read in the past on the "other board" about the get-together deals they used to do.  Maybe "BDO's" is what they called them???  You guys ever done anything like that?

We have had a small private "BDO" It was a group of us that have hunted together, and we all set a date, went to the national forest, and bbq'ed, camped, and hunted. We hunted Sat Am, Sat PM, and Sun AM. Matt chickened out on the Saturday evening hunt. Something about his wife's birthday..... :o

I have seen the videos and heard too much negative to have an open BDO that I would want to be involved with.   Too many people, too many dogs, and too many personalities.

The private "BDO's" are fun, as long as everyone's ego is left at the house. If someone wants to try to put one together, I will do what I can to help.

Diesel and second mortgage.   You are not kidding, fuel prices have slowed us down.

I feel I am lucky to get to hunt with this group of people, like Chris said everyone gets along always fun. Even though I guessed the closest on the weight and got the hog I am going to go ahead and let Clay have it, It was the hog with the most teeth I've caught but Clay had his bulldog on the hunt and it was his first catch, it probably means more to him,  I was going to mount it but it was missing alot of haur on one of its shoulder.

I can tell Matt hasn't been married as long as I have.  For my wife's birthday, she asked that the kids and I please go entertain ourselves elsewhere so she could read a book, look at stories on TV, and whatever else she likes to do!  :)

I have seen the videos and heard too much negative to have an open BDO that I would want to be involved with.   Too many people, too many dogs, and too many personalities.

I understand what you mean.  Back a few years ago when I still had my place down in Rockport I used to do a guys type weekend / fish / BBQ / BS deal a couple times a summer.  It was fun when it was a small select group, but then when friends starting inviting friends who invited friends it just became a little much.  I didn't want to be the bad guy and make someone feel that they didn't get an invitation, so I cut it out all together.

Bryant,

Mandi's birthday was spent in the woods hunting with Me , Mike, Sean, and Matt. We then went to lunch at County Line BBQ for lunch.  Takes a special girl to put up with my crap, much less spend her birthday hunting.  ;D

Heck, if thats the same County Line BBQ as down the road in Austin I'd go on my birthday too knowing that was to be had later on for lunch!  Thats some good grub!

Yep, there's no doubt I take for granted sometimes that my wife lets me rip and ride the way I do.  It really helps now that my six year old is my running buddy and can pretty much hang with me.  When the three year old gets a little further along, she probably won't have use for any of us!  Just kidding...she's a keeper.  Sounds like you snagged a good one too!
