Title: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: Circle C on December 10, 2009, 12:34:45 pm Here's a question for y'all. How did you get the best dog you ever owned?
Was it a pup you purchased or were given and raised yourself? A young dog that you purchased or were given? A pup that your intentionally bred and raised? A grown dog, that you purchased already trained? A grown dog that you were given? For me, I have what I consider my best, and my favorite, and they are two different dogs. Both were purchased as adult dogs. Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: Cutter Bay Kennels on December 10, 2009, 12:52:16 pm A dog that I intentionally bred, raised, and trained was the best I have owned. He had a very good reputation around these parts as being a legitamate contender no matter what you turned him out with. RIP SAMPSON!!!!!!!
Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: Monteria on December 10, 2009, 12:52:52 pm Bred by bringing our lines back to one of the grand mothers (owned by another man).
Sold as a pup, people couldn't keep it contained. I got it back at almost a year old, built him an ALMOST inescapable kennel, through him in the woods with zero training and he found a pig, then another, then another on his first hunt. He never slowed down after that until he escaped from his ALMOST inescapable kennel, went hunting on his own and came back snake bit...... He was my best dog, damn impressive at only 1.5 years old, and getting better every trip. Trying to reproduce him now. Steve Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: LionandBoarHunter on December 10, 2009, 12:54:13 pm the best dogs i ever owned or ever hunted with came out of my line of dogs these dogs you could take where there wasnt any hogs and they go out in the middle of thicket some where and scratch a spot out on the ground and sheet one out and bay it

Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: TexasHogDogs on December 10, 2009, 01:09:09 pm A dog named Black Jack he was found on the side of the road at a roadside park sitting on the concrete tables a buddy of mine picked him up and we tried to find the owner of this dog for three months never found them. I dont think he was a hog dog before I got him. My buddy called me on a very very cold Dec night as a matter of fact it was the nite before Xmas and it was sleeting and cold as hell told me hey Jim you said you was looking for a dog to work I got you one here dont know anything about him but I put him n the pen and he done pretty well.
I didnt want to go because this guy lived 35 miles from me and the weather was terriable but me and my son went and picked him up soon as I saw him I like him he jumped right in the back of the truck took him hunting he didnt know anything at first but was the fastest learning dog I have ever seen in my life time and I have seen a lot of them and the rest is History around here all my buddys that has ever hunted with that dog on a reg basis will tell you they aint ever seen a dog do the things that dog would do to get a hog . He was the type of dogs that found hogs when there was none never had a bad habit in his life . The most amazing thing I ever seen that dog do was wind a hog from across a coastal patch that was at least 1200 yards across take off like a Tomahawk missile and hit the woods on the other side with us watching in disbelief and sthen go 200 yards into the woods and bayed up a big boar in the middle of a creek . It took us 15 mins to get to him from having to go threw all the gates he not only done this one time but threee times with all of us looking on my good friend Tom Graham chairman of the board of the Lacy dog org will tell you the same thing along with his daughter , son in law my son and Cory and Kyle and the land owner himself. Went on a hunt one morning let out at 7am and we had 11 big big hogs by 11 am withhim finding them all went back the next morning let at at 7 am again and caught 10 more all big hogs over 150 lbs with him again finding them all. Watch this dog one day wind a hog from about 1000 yards away took off in a full run and when he got to the gate are the road waited on us to catch up we went threw the gate and as soon as we crossed the road he took off again and in less than three mns had a 285 lbs sow bayed . Watched this dog get on a big boar hog 250 lbs run him for half mile in 30 degree weather in the middle of Jan and had him in the middle of a tank swimming in circles finally we shot the hog and the hog went to the bottem of the tank and the dog would not come out of the tank he was diving down tryin to find the hog my son had to strip off and go in and get him so we took off and looked back missing him and he was back in the middle of the tank agian my son went int to try and get him but he would not let my son get close to him so we went back to the truck to warm up came back 30 mins late the dog was still in the tank still trying to find the hog and diving down here and thre to try to get him finally my son went back in with a rope dove down in 10 foot of freezing water tie the rope around the hogs legs and we pulled the hog out with the four wheelers ahahahahahh then the dog would come to us and he like to froze to death before we could get to the truck again. No number 2 true story with plenty of back up . Black Jack got killed two years ago on one of the baddest hogs I have ever seen a man agressive boar and a pure dog killer that killed and cut up many many dogs on that place. First time I had ever put a cut collar on him and the hogs tusk missed the collar by about a 1/16 of a inch and hit him in the jugular and Black Jack never quit the hog he died on the run chasing the hog . Dogs all came back but black jack covered in blood spray from head to toe but not one dog was cut I tld Tom right there my Black Jack dog is dead 30 min later we found in in a slew with a trail of blood leading up to him died on the run doing what he loved to do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111 He was a mans man and the best I ever hunted behind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe not a perfect defenition of a finished dog but onehell of a great great dog !!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Boar that killed Black Jack hunted him finally got him a little over a year later. Post by: Bryant on December 10, 2009, 01:17:05 pm The best dog I ever owned, I raised from a pup (that I bought).
I've All my favorite and best dogs have grown up where they live. The consistancy of these dogs even long before breeding any of my own made me a believer and are what got me interested in GOOD GENETICS. I currently have a litter of six pups that are seven months old and these will be my first attempt at pups actually BORN and raised on my property. Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: coach on December 10, 2009, 01:31:27 pm One was an adult dog given was a cowdog, named Baby bought out of stockdale that would trash on hogs. Loved her BMC Long range endless bottom made for many long nights. Other I bought as a finished strike dog BMC named Sandy from guys in Cleveland 2yr for 200 should have known better. But Was the best purchase I ever made. First time out struck a cow, a coon, a deer almost culled her right there. Reprimanded her turned her out again struck a hog and was the first of many. lived to be 7yrs died in my arms carrying her back from getting gutted on a hog over 2miles away from truck.
Last was one I purchased from Mr. Crainer as a pup she was automatic little fireball. Struck solo and continued from 7mo old. Blk / tan cur named Rena Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: Eric on December 10, 2009, 03:59:13 pm Raised it from a pup, was sold the dog for like $25 by a guy I was hunting with, she is a PitXAB.
Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: pig snatcher on December 10, 2009, 04:51:08 pm Best I have owned was given to me as a grown dog.
Second best (died at 2 or 3 years old) I raised from a pup that was given to a friend and then given to me. Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: BigAinaBuilt on December 10, 2009, 09:28:01 pm The best dog I have ever had was actually found in the forest while I was training a few dogs with 1 of my older dogs. My older dog hit a 170 pound boar with 2" cutters and the youngins answered and went in and took a beating and out of the forest came a dog that joined in and shut the boar down! I placed ads in the newspaper and left a note at the spot and noone responded for almost 2 months and so I ran him and used him to train my younger dogs and then one day a guy called and desribed the dog to the T and so I told him where he could pick him up at. Got a case of Heinekens for returning him home but man I miss that dog! The guy didn't really wanna chat bout the dog and it's breeding but by the reaction of the dog to the truck when he drove up I knew it was his ride home! So I guess I owned him for 2 months!

I'm adding you to my (short) list of honest people I've met in the dog world. That's a very commendable thing you did with that dog. He was 1/4 plott 1/4 bull mastiff and 1/2 catahoula. He was a hog catching machine.
My dad owned the grandsire, a plott from washington state. First time I ever saw my dad cry when Killer died, he was the last blood out of his old plott. Raised him from a pup. I just did what I would hope someone would do for me if they found any of my dogs wandering. I know that feeling of an empty kennel eating you and it sucks! Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: hoghitters on December 10, 2009, 09:56:47 pm I received a grown dog from David [Find a hog kennels]. Loop is a half bird/cur dog. ;D My buddies talk about loop that he's not a woods dog? But! At the end of the hunt , it's a different story!!!! :o
Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: ETHHunters on December 10, 2009, 10:08:06 pm The best dog I ever owned was given to me as a pup. The guy gave me 3 of them. 1/2 blackmouth and 1/2 b&t. The parents were just yard dogs. No hunting background what so ever. He will be 5 in Feb. and you would have to have some very deep pockets to buy him. I regret like hell getting rid of the other two while they were so young. Thats the main reason why I dont get all beside myself with a certain bloodline or cross.
Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: jeffeasttx on December 11, 2009, 07:51:08 am Best dog i have owned is ybmc, alot of people probably wouldn't like him, cus he is tooo rough, and too slow but i somehow catch hogs with him consistenly. I purchased the dog from a friend of mine from this website (outlaw). He caught many of hogs with him, reason he sold the dog to me was he was tooo slow to keep up with his other dogs. Would sell him for anything now.
Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: Goatcher on December 11, 2009, 03:54:53 pm Cyrus was his name and I paid $75 for him at 7 months old in 1973. He never saw a hog in his life and on the day I bought him I swung by my hunting area on the way home and he bayed and my catch dog caught a 50 pound shoat and a 200 pound sow! That dog took me under his wing and showed me everything I know about hog and hogdogs today. I had him 10 years and he helped start my professional hog hunting business in 1985. He died when he was shot baying a sow. He felt no pain, the bullet bounced off the hog's shoulder blade and went into his brain.
He was out of the Texas NB Hunt Ranch cow dog stock. They had a ranch in Livermore, CA and another in Covelo, CA. I found an ad in Tom Stodghill's ARF magazine for the pup. His parents and aunts and uncles were all at the Covelo ranch and they all looked like a bunch of scarred up black mouth curs, with no teeth in the front from busting them out on hard headed cows. Every dog was yellow, except Cyrus. He looked like a catahoula leopard dog, spotted back, walker hound looking white legs and belly with red head, even had one full blue eye. Biggest canine teeth on a dog I have ever seen. Cyrus knew we liked big boars, so he sought them out most of the time. Stone broke, tireless, go yonder dog. Makes me want to cry. Who's dumb idea was it to start this topic? Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? X2 Welcome Jim Reuben Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: Reuben on October 21, 2010, 08:07:36 am I have had several good dogs and some I considered very good. But I had one that I raised in my back yard that was born great. At 8 weeks he was winding for treats as were the littermates but when I started running drags he led the pups around and he made it look easy. Before 12 weeks of age he could run a drag that had loops and figure eights. I quit running drags when he even followed a double back track that I finished in a 5 gallon bucket.
He was striking hogs before 6 months of age and at 1 year of age could hunt with the best. I could write a book on this dog. I have had some real good dogs but none like yeller. He just knew where to find a hog and quick. When I dropped the tailgate he would make a quick round and if he came back within 5 minutes or so you might as well load up and move on because there wouldn't be any hogs in the vicinity. Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? I should have listened to you and we should have bred her back to one of her uncle's. If you ever have more of this lineage need to let me know. She was a great dog and I was proud to own her.
Title: Re: The best dog you ever owned? Post by: TinyTexasCowgirl on November 07, 2010, 06:26:11 pm Her name was Lacee. I got her by accident. Was walking around a rodeo and saw a guy with the prettiest blue puppy that I had ever laid eyes on. We got to bs'ing and he mentioned that he had that pup and his full sister there for a buddy of his who had decided that he didn't want the pups and he jokingly (I thought) said that his mom was gonna shoot him if he brought the pups home so I laughed and teased him bout me already having 4 dogs, 3 horses, a goat, and a few feral cats, so I didn't see how two more pups would hurt... Wwweeelllll, 45 mins later I got back to my truck, and there were two pups in the bed, the guy's rig was nowhere in sight... Well long story short, the blue pup died, and Lacee became my lil girl. She actually saved me from lord knows what one time at a truck stop when a truck driver tried to corner me while I was lettin her pee, I bet the scars on his calf make him think before putting his hands on a chick holding a cur dog's lease again... I let a buddy borrow her as a 2 year old to use as a bay dog for one hunt, and she never came home. He said that she was the most natural bay dog he had ever seen. She had no quit, and if you didn't get there fast enough, she didn't mind putting her teeth on one, so he ran a vest on her. They got on a big ole sow that wouldn't stop running and Lacee kept after her, even after the other 6 bay dogs gave up and laid down. She literally ran until her heart burst, and when I found out she had died, well, my own heart shattered. It might be just a girl thing, but he searched until he found her, took the vest off her, and left her laying. I was, and still am TICKED.. I begged him to tell me where she was so that I could go get her and bury her, and he told me he couldn't even remember where she was....
