Title: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: PPHOGDOGGER on December 13, 2009, 10:38:37 pm GOT INTO WITH A GUY TODAY AND HE TENDS TO BELIEVE THAT PIG STICKERS NEED TO COME OFF OF MICK DUNDEES DRESSER. I ON THE OTHER HAND BELIEVE A KNIFE WITH A 6" BLADE IS THE PERFECT SIZE.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: catchrcall on December 13, 2009, 10:41:39 pm mine is a k-bar knockoff, I think it's 7.5 in.

Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: cowcountryhogdogger on December 13, 2009, 10:45:57 pm I have 2 different knives that I carry depending which one i grab at the time. Didn't realize it till this post came up but both are 6.5" long blades. Different handles and blade shapes, but never had a problem with either one being too short.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: HogzgoneWild on December 13, 2009, 10:46:57 pm Normally tie em' too, but I have been lookin for a good 6" double edge to carry for just in case, can't seem to locate one at a decent price!
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on December 13, 2009, 10:55:20 pm Sooner or later a six inch blade will not get the job done. I had a huge problem one night with a BIG boar, Jasper and a six inch knife....all bad. I have carried a ten inch blade from that night forward, I have never been sorry.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: cowcountryhogdogger on December 13, 2009, 10:57:06 pm Yeah I'm not sure if it is or not but Paul's knife looks like an army rifle bayonet. And he's got the draw perfected to look just like a calvary soldier drawing his saber heading into battle ;D
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on December 13, 2009, 11:07:17 pm I hunted alone for many years and it is a battle, isn't it. Kill the hog fast and well.
WWII Bayonett from a M1 Garand, locking, hard scabard. Great Boar knife. Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: cowcountryhogdogger on December 13, 2009, 11:14:12 pm Paul all we need to do now is find you a mcclellan saddle for your mule and recrease your hat and you'd really fit the part ;) . That's the first I've ever seen the bayonet in use and was very impressed how effective it is and quickly it finished the job.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on December 13, 2009, 11:19:41 pm Mcclellan saddle >:(
Well stuck hog should be down and out in 7 sec. Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: FORREST on December 14, 2009, 07:50:57 am Kabar-7.5" blade. Hasn't let me down yet.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Black Gold on December 14, 2009, 08:17:09 am These are the field knives made by GLOCK. They run about $25-$30 new. Get the one without the saw-back. Goes in like hot butter, and you can sharper the top to give a double edge at the tip. Polymer sheath that keeps knife snapped in place. 6.5" blade.
What I use now. The Gladius Hunter has a 6" blade that gets great reviews. We also have Spanish Mauser bayonets. These bayonets are used military grade and come with steel and composition scabbard. They are 13 1/4" overall length with 8 3/4" carbon steel blades and composition handles. Made to fit the FR7 and FR8 Spanish Mauser. These knives have thick narrow blades that make excellent stabbing weapons. Knives may slightly vary in look and design. USED CONDITION
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Circle C on December 14, 2009, 10:39:56 am It's hard to beat a Buck 119. Reasonably priced if you lose it, and goes in like it's a hot knife through butter.
6" blade length (http://buck-knife-shop.com/images/buck_119_special_ds0g.png) Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Eric on December 14, 2009, 10:53:12 am The first knife I ever use was a Buck. Shortly after that I bought a Buck 119 for the thicker blade. Thru the years I have tried different knives but alway came back to the 119.
It makes a difference to keep your sticking knife shart. Have never needed any thing more than 6". Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: T-Bob Parker on December 14, 2009, 11:57:20 am Sounds to me like six inches is just fine if you
know how to use it O0 ;D you know keeping it sharp. Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: matt_aggie04 on December 14, 2009, 11:59:09 am I was waitin on that response ;D

Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: make-em-squeel on December 14, 2009, 01:03:26 pm I used a 6.5 in sog forever with no issues, now I have a 7.5 in sog and it has only been needed once but why not prepare ahead of time, it may take 5 - 10 yrs before you were glad you had the extra help but better than a horror story, or dead dog.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on December 14, 2009, 01:13:27 pm Anyone who thinks I have any problems handling a knife needs to come for a visit.
I will say this again, If you hunt long enough you will have a time when a six inch knife feels like a tooth pic. I have had to kill large boars from the top while on their backs, try that with a 6" blade and see how you like it, ;D Now for y'all that hunt with a big group of people all the time and you can get the hog legged and held down all nice and pretty a 6" blade will work fine. But if you ever get split off by your self and get in a bad spot, more knife will make a difference. That is not opinion....OK off my soap box, haha Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Eric on December 14, 2009, 01:19:57 pm Sounds to me like six inches is just fine if you know how to use it O0 ;D you know keeping it sharp. ... and lots of practice... ;D Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Mike on December 14, 2009, 01:36:05 pm Anyone who thinks I have any problems handling a knife needs to come for a visit. Try being 7 foot down in a hole on the back of a 450# barr hog with 3 to 4 inches of fat around it... a six inch blade won't even scratch the surface. ;D I like the cheap, throw-down, "pig stickers"... very light weight and i've needed it on several occasions where the shorter blades wouldn't cut it. :o Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Cull Buck on December 14, 2009, 02:13:45 pm I like a 7"-8" double edged blade.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Circle C on December 14, 2009, 02:18:23 pm After reading this post, I have decided that 6" just isn't enough.
I am going to start carrying a sword, in case I catch a real hog rolleyes Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: sfboarbuster on December 14, 2009, 02:33:48 pm I think a 6" knife will do it, but it sure makes it alot easier if you have something bigger.

Of coarse it will do it, the key is MOST of the time. why wait for the 5% chance to catch you??Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Circle C on December 14, 2009, 03:36:17 pm Guy's I am just messin around. I always joke with Mike that I am going to buy him one of those Pakistani swords that people sell on the side of the road. I also tell him to watch the dogs on the other side of the hog when he goes to stick one. ;D
Whatever works.... Just make sure it's sharp. Biggest binds I have seen are people having to fight to get the knife in. Length does not help on a dull knife. A sharp knife, you just cut a gash, and slide in deeper. Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: hogdoggerdude14 on December 14, 2009, 04:12:16 pm I have a 8 inche Bowie from winchester that was 20$

Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: BLUE LACY on December 14, 2009, 05:16:07 pm I use a Buck 119 6 inch blade. life time warranty they run around 40-50 dollars.

You can get them for $15-25. I keep like 3 on hand at a time because I lose them alot. Killl a hog stick it in the ground... lose it. Cut some thing, put it on the bumper or toolbox... drive off. ;D Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: craig on December 14, 2009, 06:18:25 pm i have a 120 buck , i have had the same knife for almost 20 yrs, ( i will loose the darn thing now after braging like that) anyways i think it has a 6" blade as well. i have needed a longer blade one time about 10 yr ago on a fat barr hog, thats a bad fealing giving all you got and not doing any good. i made a sheath on my leggings to carry it in.

I was extremely impressed on how he handled that boar and then stuck him through the front. I would imagine that your sticking style would determine the blade length. I can say through butchering barrs for the table that 6 inches through the front has always been plenty, but I don't think I would trust that in the woods.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: sfboarbuster on December 14, 2009, 07:42:42 pm When I do kill them, I flip them and stick it in their armpit area.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Hogdoggin51 on December 14, 2009, 07:59:44 pm cold steel makes a nice double edge knife that i use. i think it is seven inches. also have the 5 inch folding pocket knife that is great for gutting. cold steel has a sharp edge and holds if for a long time. take care and God Bless. anthony
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: T-Bob Parker on December 14, 2009, 08:33:24 pm Actually knife placement is key on the type you need. Ive noticed most guys I hunt with stick the underarm which is great and a lot of times I do it to but my good old pawpaw tuaght me to start at the front of the breast bone and slice deep across the throat. This leaves the heart beating to aid in proper bleeding. If I sluaghter at home with grandad he makes me hang them by the back legs before sticking with pan for blood collection (for suasage) gross I know but that's the old German way.also I don't know what model # but I use a 6 1/4 inch CASE knife, shaving sharp!
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Eric on December 14, 2009, 08:33:30 pm Left armpit... poke in and slice down.
Alot of people mess up by stabbing high and when they don't get it they move the end of the blade up and down. That is why they think they need long knives double edged. If you get a good sharp knife and go down, even if you are high you will slice the heart coming down. You may have a 6" slit in the side but it is fast and you have better odds of getting the heart. Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: TX HOG on December 14, 2009, 08:46:36 pm i use a knife a little under 6" that i got from academy for less than $20. its legal to have when not hunting. if you cant reach the heart you can always reach the brain. >:D.
if you feel that you need a big knife theres one on ebay called "THE PIG STICKER". lol. 10.5" blade i think. its also good for clearing brush and small trees Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: T-Bob Parker on December 14, 2009, 09:01:29 pm I don't want to be graphic but really a hard blow to base of skull where the spine attaches or cuttiing it turns the lights of immediately but wouldn't recommend it on feral pigs in the woods. That was the standard in the sluaghter houses of yesteryear.

Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on December 15, 2009, 02:21:12 pm I have one.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Cristina on December 15, 2009, 02:40:43 pm I have a 4 1/2 inch blade, my dad uses a bayonet he's been using one ever since I can remember he lost his first one in the Sam national forest and my brother got him another one for his birthday a few years back, one of my brothers has a really nice winchester blade it looks 10 inches and we have buck knives everywhere! They get lost and you can find at least two in the truck lol as far as where to stick we do it a little bit above the armpit area.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: T-Bob Parker on December 15, 2009, 08:51:41 pm I want a boar spear for shear coolness but is it cumbersome? it would probably be dangerous in my fat hands, also is a hog still standing and fighting you when you bury the blade?
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on December 15, 2009, 09:55:24 pm Yes its cumbersum, I carry mine on the truck and use it for sticking hogs that are caught in windmill overflows or other deep mud holes where I can't get in close. I would not let anyone but me use one around my dogs.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Russ on December 16, 2009, 10:11:43 am Paul all we need to do now is find you a mcclellan saddle for your mule and recrease your hat and you'd really fit the part ;) . That's the first I've ever seen the bayonet in use and was very impressed how effective it is and quickly it finished the job. I got a WWII Jap bayonet but b/c of what it is and how it was obtained (Grandfather brought it back) I could never use it for a sticker, though it would do the job nicely if ask to! I think the blade alone is 13-15". But bayonets are made for one thing and one thing only, make a hole that bleeds like crazy and not clot or be sewn up easy. I got a 10" sticker a buddy made, it's great for bigger hogs or inexperianced hunters. Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: muleman on December 16, 2009, 10:23:42 am Dont know if anyone mentioned it yet but Cheaperthandirt.com sells a rough use knife that is freakin indestructable for about 10 bucks. you can watch them testing it on youtube.
Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Cutter Bay Kennels on December 16, 2009, 03:20:39 pm Whatever works.... Just make sure it's sharp. Biggest binds I have seen are people having to fight to get the knife in. Length does not help on a dull knife. A sharp knife, you just cut a gash, and slide in deeper. When I've had to kill them because we could not just release them, a good sharp knife of almost any size works. I have to admit, I've killed several with the disposable snap off blade razor knives that you get at the local hardware store. They weigh nothing, and they are easy enough to keep sharpened. Just install a new blade. A verticle slice by the lung and he's down for the count. I hate a regular fixed blade handle sticking me in the side while I'm moving through the thick brush. It gets old quick. Plus, I'm always feeling to make sure a good knive has not fallen out of the sheath. I've got a truck door pocket full of hog stickers, but most have more dust than blood on them. Title: Re: STICKING KNIFE LENGTH Post by: Bino9905 on December 20, 2009, 10:48:27 pm I have the buck 119 used it on my first hunt and felt like I was cutting butter.
