Title: How many jagdterriers does it take to hold a 300 plus pound boar?
Post by: Goatcher on December 19, 2009, 03:02:16 pm
This place required that all hogs be killed, not catch and tie.   Video taken February 2009.  Hog weighed over 300, its canines were all broke off either fighting the dogs or in fights with other hogs.  We could have had some dogs hurt if the tusks were not broken.  We were training a catahoula (his first hunt) and some plott hound pups with the jagdterriers.

Ad the end of the video, it asked who needs pitbulls when you have jagds.  Why was the hog shot?  Did the jagds not catch and hold that hog?

thats exactly what I was thinking, not taking anything away from the little fellas but it probably should have said who needs a pitbull when you have a gun! nice hog

:)  It was shot because it was on a refuge and they watch everyone closely to make sure that no live, tied hogs are removed.  Big fines.  It was also shot because it was in thick briars and vines and who wants to get all scratched up to stick one when the game warden is breathing down your neck and they want them shot dead anyway.  I thought I made that clear in the first sentence.  It actually was a nice Russian hybrid and would have been great to tie and take home to the bay pen.  Also, we did have two catch dogs, but they ran the opposite way on another hog which we never found!!! :-\

Actually, jags make terrible catch dogs.  I am not proposing they be a substitute for a good pitt or dogo or Am Bull.   Too small.  If that boar was not tangled in green briars he would have took off wearing all those jagterriers like ear rings!  Usually we require a real catch dog to anchor one down of this size.  We got lucky that day.

It would have been nice to "trim" this one and find him a couple years later when his tusks grew back!

No offense take, when I post a video, I expect questions.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million and an equal number of questions like yours.

I don't like shooting over caught dogs like that either.  Always a bad idea.  I have seen .22 bullets amd buckshot pellets bounce of hog bones and kill dogs.  And that is assuming there is not a dog under the hog.  I might have stuck it if I was the lead man, but I was "camera man" that time.  The .22 mag revolver bullet just paralyzed or stunned the hog, as you can see we finished it with a knife.  Off camera, I drilled the shooter, to make sure he accounted for all the dogs and their positions before he shot.  He placed the end of the barrel at the base of the neck at the shoulders at an angle away from the catching terriers before pulling the trigger.  He was actually on top of a large log so he could reach over into the briar patch to the hog's spine.

It is also bad form for the little jagdterriers to catch like that.  I have since weeded out the head hunters and kept the ones that bay best and if they catch, not on the head.

Sean

The best cold track jag I had was a head hunter, and it was her demise.  She was an automatic big boar catcher that nothing else could find her last 3 hunts.  Real heartbreaker.  So I am staying away from those!  Three or four inches of teeth on a 20 lb dog is like taking a sword to another dog.

That's a shame and a real heart breaker. Some of these jagds have too much attitude and not enough brain for their own good. I would have like to make it to the hunt ya'll are having in Feb, but I'll probably be freezing my butt off working in Pennsylvania then. I'd like to see your mob of mini devils in action.

I wish you could come.  We are headed to this same place in three weeks.  The state opened up three more areas north of there and I expect most others will go to the new sites and leave us all alone at the old one!!!

I don't really know what is going on with YouTube.  Its just a grainy cellphone video anyway.  But here is another link to it.

Since this hunt the state wildlife agency backed off making killing them mandatory.  Now the issue ears tags to take them out alive to confinement.  Program started 3 yrs ago.  Be sure its still allowed.
