Title: Dog trashing question
Post by: buddylee on January 01, 2010, 02:21:40 am
Anyone ever notice if there is a difference between dogs worked on hogs alot as youngsters and those not worked until say a year old when it comes to trashing. Me and a buddy were discussing this the other day and we both agreed we seem to have more problems with trashing with dogs who were not worked on hogs till later in life. I have never had much problems with dogs I raise from pups. I introduce them to hogs very early by taking them with me when I feed my hogs or working older dogs. Anyone ever notice this ???

Well, I will buy in on that 110% in my experience. I had a pair litter mates (still have 1, RIP Pepper), they were hog crazy in the pen at a very early age. I got a gyp that was a 1yo to add to my young pack. These pups were all a year old at the same time, a shock collar could not keep her off of deer. The male dogs mentioned have always been tattle-tale dogs, very honest. Today if I get an older pup will try to "buddy" them up with my best dog, this seems to help some. When they go barreling after a deer and they are by themselves and they listen to me better. Youngsters will be youngsters, who knows what they will do next???

You said it best "dogs that you raise" we are always trying to improve our pack by bringing in an outside dog. The best dogs that I have ever had hunted with their parents. I have a pup that is 1yo "almost trash proof deluxe" that has been hunting since he was 6mo with parents (he was baying solo in pen at 2mo) proof is in the pudding.....

I think that you and your friend are right on with this thought.....

Happy New Year

My old dog that was giving to me by a good friend bumped a deer or BUMPED 2 deer today. The youngster made it happen... There is nothing that can replace a home grown pup, unless it is a fluke Catahoula or two??? We got a good one to start the year off..... Blind Luck never hurts.....

i agree with that...i try to start my pups around 6-9mos on hogs. if they bay a hog they are in the woods with older trash broke dogs. that way when they are in the woods the only thing they know to bay is a hog. i went hunting two days ago and my little bmc gyp winded some hogs about 300+yds away or so. we kept walking and we heard her open up. i just KNEW she was baying cattle..nope..she ran through two pastures full of cattle and a horse just to get to the hogs and stayed bayed for 30min till the other dogs got there...i might have the exception but i think starting them young and making sure they are running with trash broke dogs helps your cause. as their hunt grows they know all they are hunting for is hogs...older dogs have all that hunt but don't know where to focus it, so you get trash runners..jmo
