Title: Bloodlines
Post by: BigAinaBuilt on January 07, 2010, 07:17:51 pm
I just got back from exercising with the dogs  rolleyes "Dryrun" and while I was walking through the forest today I had this mindboggling thought pop into my head that I just had to bring to the board as soon as I got home. So with all these bloodlines of "Purebred" dogs running around today where does the name originate?? Does it come from one guy crossing Bloodline X to Bloodline Y and naming it after themselves?? Wouldn't it still be a XY bloodline?? Where does the line start??? Could I breed a Ladner Cur and a Weatherford's Ben and then line breed them for 15 years and rename them The Bigainabuilt Cur?? I definately do not mean to step on anyones toes but am just curious how this whole Bloodline name sakes work out.

Yes Sir that pretty much sums it up. Thats how ALL strains originate.

Yeah I often wondered the same thing...how many years/generations do you have to breed the dogs before you can name them??

And if you really think about it, there is no such thing as a "pure" breed of anything. All are crosses of something at one time or another.

It just depends on your definition of "pure".

I know for a fact that my Fla curs have bird dog, cur, possibly some ridgeback (you reading Warheid?), maybe some hound and who knows what else in them......Its just easier  to call them Fla cur dogs...........

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys! The reason I got hit head on with this question is I am in the midst of building a new pack after having to retire my 2 top dogs and picked up a "St James Greyhound cross" but I can't seem to find any line of dogs named St James except a poodle from St James, New York!   Thanks again and if anyone else has any other ideas or just wants to add some input, Feel free I would love to hear it!

So now you have a St James poodle/greyhound cross to start your pack with........ ;D

But if you send them to the groomer and paint their nails NO ONE is going to hunt with you...LOL

I'd say if your 3 generations deep of your breedings...you could call it your line.

see this is where i think the pitbullworld has it right. they don't name a line after a person it is named after a dog, ie honeybunch dogs, jeep, redboy, butcherboy, rascal, etc. this way if you said you had a heavy jeep bred dog then you know basically what type of dog you are looking at. when someone says i have a "insert breeder name" dog, that really doesn't tell me much. because on one man's yard there can be a huge variant from one dog to another, but if you know that jeep throws deep game, avg biting, high ability, fast starting dogs, when i say my dog is real heavy jeep. well you know basically what traits my dog will have.

i don't like to ask about a line with reference to a breeder, but rather the dog. i think when people start wanting to put their name on a line it becomes self serving(i don't want to offend anyone, but i'm sure i will..apologizing in advance...SORRY). when you put it on the dog then it no longer becomes about you the breeder but about the dog..jmo

Right on the Money with this statement.  I was thinking the same thing , About the Pit line of dogs.

thanx fellas...i think the only problem we run into with our cur dogs is that we don't have peds to trace dogs. when i said a jeep dog you can look at a ped and KNOW what was behind that dog and basically how to breed it to get more of what you got. a lot of our dogs are mixed up so it's kind of hard to do that.

Exactly right, Deuce...the problem is simply that with gamedogs it was rather well documented (and for the most part objectively) about each dog/line. I think that would be the most difficult part for hog dogs.

There's a little of each in the AB lines...some are defined by a family of dogs (BamaBoy, Vader, Man O War, etc) others are defined by breeders (Painter, Stover, Hines, JDJ, Scott, etc).

One guy told me that after 10-15 years of breeding a line he would give them his last name. One thing about pitbulls is papers are faked everyday. Just cause it says Jeep don't mean it is Jeep. A dog from a reputable breeder means more to me than paperwork. Campbell curs, Parker curs , Partin curs from the source are what sells a dog. After several generations of breeding of off the origianl yard then their name is as good as Jeep.

A pedigree is only as good as the man/woman that gives it to you...

I agree with Scott. I would like to know how many yellow cur dogs (that had NO W Ben blood) were pawned off as W Ben dogs as that was what was hot and selling??

I bet a BUNCH of them......

We have been breeding seriously for about 10 years. Before that we held a particular line of dog in Oz since 1986. That is the line that has fed our family of dogs...At the moment some people out here call out dogs after me ie Makim dogs but I don't call them a line yet. They are a family of dogs. Out here, lots of blokes have started calling there own backyard dogs a 'line'. Like all hunting etc, people are into it for their own reasons and so it is with naming types of dogs. For some it is about the money, for some just ego, for others it's a serious effort tp produce hunting dogs.
Whatever the case, the name of a family or line doesn't count unless hunters are saying the dogs catch pigs. People can call their dogs anything they like, but field work and independent assessment is what matters.
On the original question. I'm saying at least 10 years before you can say a line is forming up and longer than that to show it is properly stable.
And if someone is prepared to claim a family or line of dogs, there is no reason you should not expect an airtight moneyback guarantee on the dog's performance. Anything less and the breeder doesn't believe in his dogs....
Cheers.
