Title: 2 mountain cur pups and 1 1/2 mc 1/2 airdale. when do i start them on pigs Post by: Branson P on January 11, 2010, 09:28:27 pm My pups are all nine weeks old 2 of them are full blooded mountain cur and one is half mountain cur half airdale. i need to know when i can start working them on pigs and how big the pigs need to be.

From what I have gathered about this subject so far is that everyones opinion and style differs but the best advice is to let them be puppies until they're showing you they're ready and matured enough to get in there and then depending on your style of training (pen or mock hunts) you can introduce them then. All dogs mature at different rates so there really is no "set" age or size to get them "started" at. As far as how big of a pig to use the answers are just opinions once again! Some will say a little bigger then the dog and others will say the size of the hogs you plan to get on because you train on shoats they grab shoats. If you do a little searching through past threads there are a few discussions on starting dogs as young as 8 weeks all the way to 2 year olds. Welcome to ETHD and good luck!

But i always try my pup at around four months just to kinda see what they do. This will actaully be my first pack of dogs so im pretty excited. ive been going for bout 3 months now with one of my good friends thats been in it forever so im pretty sure they have taught me well so i hope this will be a good deal for me

Good choice in dogs. ;) I am partial to mt. currs and airedales and mixes of airedales.
