Title: Went to a good event last night...
Post by: Bryant on May 28, 2008, 10:17:57 pm
Last week I heard on an early morning radio outdoors show that the Texas AgriLife Extension Agency would be conducting a Ferrel Hog Seminar at the Highlander Ranch just north of Waco which is part of the McLennan Community College.  My initial thought was "WOW, what better a place to meet unhappy landowners and scout for potential new places to hunt", but after giving it some thought more importantly to me was the idea for the opportunity to promote our sport as a whole.  That afternoon, I went to work.

First, I contacted the local extension agent who was also involved in the seminar to inquire whether the topic of hunting with dogs was ever touched upon.  He immediately said "definately", welcomed my input and I could tell right away he wasn't an "anti".  I told him who I was, and that we have been hunting and building relationships with landowners for many years and how through enjoying a sport we also try to work with landowners who are having problems.  I explained that never in 15+ years have we ever charged a landowner to hunt hogs, and even though sometimes our "services" are called upon we still consider hunting on someones property a privilege.  He invited me to bring some cards, and be a part.

Last night was the seminar and I will sing their praises for a well put together, and very informative couple of hours.  There were probably 75 or so people in attendance and 99% were land owners looking for a fix.  Topics discussed included biology of feral hogs, economic impact, trapping methods as well as updates on the abatement project.  After calling on my input several times throughout the semimar, at the conclusion he mentioned what we did and that we had brought some cards that would be located by the entrance if anyone had interest.  Surprising to me, when the seminar was over people flocked around.  I had taken a hunting partner with me in case that happened and we were bombarded with questions.  We spent the next while visiting with people and explaining what we do.  Over 40 of my cards were taken, and I even received a phone call today.

I felt really good when it was all said and done that first and foremost, we were able to shed some positive light on our sport.  Secondly, I was also excited at the possibility that I might even end up with a few new places to hunt just to boot.

One thing I learned was that these seminars and conducted periodically, and in many different locations throughout the state.  I would suggest that some of you contact your local extension office and see if there are plans for one in your area.  In my opinion, It's a really good way to present our sport in a positive atmosphere.

Bryant, thank you for getting out there letting people know how affective running dogs is controlling feral hogs.

It's an uphill battle that i've been fighting down here for the past few years. Trying to convince government agencies, parks, golf courses, etc... is hard to do. But once you do and show them... the phone never stops ringing.

Get ready... i'll bet you're about to have your hands full. ;D
