Title: Rice bran oil
Post by: UNDERDOG on January 21, 2010, 12:45:35 am
The weat germ oil thread had me thinking about the rice bran oil BigO told me about. I been through two gallons so far and it seems to work on dogs who are hard keepers and has the others lookin pretty good too. Didn't some other try it also?

I've been using it for the last couple of months also. It's definately kept the dogs looking better with all the cold weather we've had.

Could y'all share how you buy it and how you put it on or in the food.  I have a dog that needs some weight put on him.

They sell gallon jugs of it at TSC... in by the horse feed. I just put mine in a little spray bottle and give 6 squirts on top of their feed every evening... comes out to about 1 tablespoon.

Yeah, I put a tablespoon too, but I like the idea of the spray bottle.  Seems like more of the feed will get covered.  Cause I have one that don't eat much but she really likes the rice bran oil.

I'm using it as a winter time food supplement... i've had to cut a couple of dogs back because it puts the weight on.

But I can see it being great for weight gain on a poor dog.

Rice Bran oil is given to dogs that have a difficult time keeping weight on and gives them a shiny coat, It is also a great source of Vitamin E!
Keep in mind guys that no matter which oil or oils you decide to give your dogs you still need to look into the IU (International Units) to figure out how much oil to give a dog because one manufacture could offer 1 IU per Tsp and another could offer 2 IU per Tsp. Especially when dealing with Fat soluble Vitamins A,D,E,K as they are stored in fat and can accumilate over time. The Toxicity level of Vitamin E is pretty high but here is a chart if anyone is interested: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1448&aid=710

I use it for both and noticed tonight that I am feeding less food since I been usesing it and the dogs look and act much better w/ that being said I have been on that victor dog food for 10 or so bags so I guess the comb is working.

I just weaned a litter and fed the gyp this the whole time and it seemed to help her keep her weight and bounce back from the pups quickly.

I am gonna try this.  Just bought some and it is expensive but the ammount will last me for a while if I can keep it from spoiling.  What are yalls experience with how long a gallon will stay fresh.  The manufacture recommends using it within 60 days but that will never happen in my situation.

I never had one last over 60 days but maybe you could split a gallon w/ a bud?

I just thought i'd bring this up to the top again. I started my dogs back on it a couple of weeks ago with the cold weather setting in.

I use this on my students livestock projects, mainly our goats.  It does real well on helping get some added weight on them.  Anytime with adding "oils" to an animals diet you need to be careful not to add to much....toooo much can cause unwanted stools!!!  ;)
