I dont know what a high performance dog food is BUT i am feeding Pedigree from wal mart in the yellow bag and it has some skin and coat enhancing stuff and it is has my dogs looking better and cleaner then when i feed them. Sportsmix any other $20+ bag of food.  ;D. I think a 50lb bag is $15 but it does get em a little too fat if i dont hunt one weekend.  :P

I was feeding purina dog chow to my dogs at one time and noticed that one of them stayed a little heavy.  I switched to black gold about two months ago and i can already tell a difference in her weight and activity level.  Black gold seems to be pretty good stuff as far as i can tell.

I would like to try black gold but no feed stores sell it close to me.

Diamond was ok but if i was hunting 2 or 3 days a week it seemed to keep my dogs on the poor side a little even though they were in shape and healthy it just was not a good appearnce in the public eye.

I had to feed more of the diamond to keep the hounds looking OK. Wendlands keeps them looking nice, but I have to watch how much I feed a couple of the ones who get porky.

On a similar note - How much would you feed a dog on the injured (bed rest) list? He's gonna be out for a few months or so. I can't have him getting fat and putting too much stress on his injury, but I don't want him to be starving all the time.

I would go with a less protien and fat feed and give what the bag says. I think they are talking about a average dog when they are testing the feed. ( I am talking about the amounts they say to feed the dog) I dont think they were testing dogs in the enviroment we put them in.

Clay, this dog will be seriously bedridden for a month at least. He's got a broken leg.

I feed Merrick. It's high quality = high performance and less food that I have to feed. I feed about 1 cup of food to a 45lb dog compared to other brands where I was feeding 2+ cups to the same dog. Better ingredients = less food.
No offense to the fella on the other page but I don't see how any animal could survive on Alpo.  :-\

Black Gold all the way $23.45 a bag with as much as I hunt my dogs they look and feel better than when on any other feed Ive used.
sounds a little steep but it is alot cheaper and works better for me in the long run.

I have always liked Pride, although I have never heard of anyone out west using it.  Verry populare here w/ hunting and field trial dogs. The blue bag 27/18 and green bag 26/18 are the most populare.  The orange bag which has higher protien/fat content is also poppulare but a good bit more expensive.

I use Diamond High Energy. I used to feed a 50/50 mix of High Energy and Premium Adult, but with the rising costs I went with the High Energy and the dogs do well on it. Always wanted to try the Black Gold, but no one sells it in my area, that I know of.

Here is a good before and after pic. Which i like the before but if i keep feeding him the sportsmix (black Bag) high energy he just gets REALL poor lookin so then i start feeding the yellow bag of pedigree and puts more weight and he seems a little more hyper. ;D. But i like the looks of the dogs when they are that middle stage of tight skin and muscler but then if i dont feed them some fat they just keep getting skinnier.

BTW dont pay attention the beast near the dog ;) ;D
