Title: Piggy birth control
Post by: GitDatHawg on June 11, 2008, 08:15:24 pm
I read an article today in small agricultural newspaper called the Land & Livestock Post.  It was talking about  birth control for wild pigs.  Texas A&M researches have already made the contraceptive in pill form and have successfully tested it on hogs in captivity.  The pill prevents the females' eggs from maturing.  The next stage is to test it outside the lab.  Some of the hurdles for them to overcome are to ensure that only wild hogs eat it.  Which could be a little tricky.  They say the should have it ready within 3 to 5 yrs.  I dont know about yall, but I sure hope not. :P

At the Agri Life Seminar I attended a few weeks ago, they talked briefly about this.  The guy said it is effective, but not just on hogs.  He said they're spending time now trying to figure out a way so that only hogs pick it up.  The main way they are doing so now is by testing different sizes of the "pill".  Also of great uncertainty is how it could be effectively distributed.

He didn't come out and say it, but several comments he made aluded to the fact that in his mind it would never work.

one of the problems no one talks about on the coast is the decline of the fish.
one reason is the influx of urine from women on birth control. this compound does not break down. the water carrying the chemical comes in contact with the fish eggs and they fail to develop. so if this compound is not eaten by the hogs and it rains, what is the effect on the water system. no more fish.

they're using it over in England with limited success.......

I got to talk to two grad students (they were two cute girls, couldn't help it) who worked with the researcher doing this. They asked what I thought about it and I told them we Texans had the best birth control for pigs around........

Cold Steel and Hot Lead  ;) ;)
