Title: What is a Post by: Bayed Solid 31 on February 22, 2010, 07:00:41 am What is a good breed for a strike dog cause i am looking for one ? I was thinking catahula and quarter pit but im not sure
Title: Re: What is a Post by: djhogdogger on February 22, 2010, 08:26:50 am It depends on what you want the strike dog to do. A catahoula x pit will most likely grab a hog, a lot of people use those as catch dogs. If you want a strike dog that finds and bays a hog then I would suggest getting some type of cur that doesn't have any pit in it. Usually pit = grab. Thats just my oppinion...hope it helps.

Title: Re: What is a Post by: BULLMASTER on February 22, 2010, 09:36:15 pm I also agree with Hogger.I like Cats and BMCs myself but will run a Yorkie if he will find me hogs.I like a dog with a little hound in them but almost everyone I have seen was wide open on a track, but then again that can happen with all the breeds.
Title: Re: What is a Post by: SouthTexasCur on February 22, 2010, 09:41:23 pm bull has a point, hounds are mostly open mouth dogs and tend to bark on a fresh track. i had a ridgeback not to long ago that we turned out on hogs about 20 yards away in an oats field and she was barking from when she hit the ground till she had em bayed. and also if one dog trail barks more than likely most of the other dogs will too and you dont want that in most cases. but i dont know how u like to hunt.
Title: Re: What is a Post by: Critter Catcher on February 22, 2010, 09:43:35 pm I have a male Cat that will bay his @ss off and never catch, at least not yet, then I have a Cat gyp that will kill a 100 or less lb pig. I didn't teach them this, it's just in thier nature. I started and trained them together, breeding pair, the male is a real good strike dog while the gyp is more of a help dog. It seems from what I've seen the males of several breeds make a better strike dog but that is a bold statement and I'm sure someone will correct that opinion. ;D
