Title: Flounder gigging Post by: sbrooks on June 29, 2008, 05:22:11 pm Well me and my wife and son went fishing this morning for about three hours and managed only two keeper drum. When we got back to the boat ramp there was a biologist there from tpwd doing a study on fish numbers. He asked us first if we would like to participate which i did, then he asked where we cought fish, how, how long we were out how many and if we were on a guided trip or just sport fishing. he then measured the fish and wrote down all of this info. Afterwards we talked for a minute and he explained that this is how they determine the bag limits that they set in the state waters for game fish. Anyways i also asked about the low numbers of flounder lately and if they had some type of hatcheries program like trout and redfish. He said no but they were testing different things on them like hormone therapy or something like that and then went on to tell me that For a certain part of the year that they would not allow gigging. Now i don't know how many of you guys have went gigging for flounder but it is pretty fun and productive as well as traditional kind of like doggin hogs. He said that they would ban gigging sometime in the winter months when large quantities of them are in the flats out of the channels for spawning. Dont know if any of you all heard this before or if you care just thought i would get some opinions on the subject.

Title: Re: Flounder gigging Post by: gonehuntin2 on August 19, 2008, 11:20:22 pm I have not been on for a while and when I saw this topic again about the flounder and gigging...well, I took my grandson to the Sea Center in Lake Jackson and went on the tour of the hatchery's. We got to see all the fish from eggs up to big reds, the trout and they have just started to reproduceing flounder...It was pretty neat to see and learn especially what the eye on the red fishes tail meant..Just FYI if you ever get to Brazoria county that is a neat place to take your kids and grandkids to see and learn about fish.....I'm sure they have places like the Sea Center :)in other place in the state....good learning experience for all... :)
