Title: Hound... Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 25, 2010, 12:12:54 pm This is not a VS thread or a what is better thread and posts along those lines will be deleted by me!!! I just want to see some pictures and hear some descriptions of some good hounds. I know there are a few on here that have them and I would like to see some pics of them and hear about how they hunt. I have this great thought in my head of having a dog that I can dump out on a track when I want, TAngel your buddies walker got me to thinking about his post. I will likely never own one that I will really like even though I have tried to buy a couple but I would like to see what others have. Also I would like to hear about primarily quiet dogs, not silent but not boohoo betty either. Fire away, look forward to seeing what is out there.

Title: Re: Hound... Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 25, 2010, 12:20:28 pm The dog on the left is a good example, plott hound, silent enough, and will flat out hustle to find a hog. I would own all hounds if there were more Annies to be had.

I look forward to it...
Title: Re: Hound... Post by: Kessling Kennels on February 25, 2010, 12:28:36 pm Southtexasdogger has THE BEST redbone hound I have ever been around.
This dog is absolutly a machine. Totally silent until looking at the hog, easy easy handle, I honestly would like to see any one that has one any better. He will hunt short range, long small property,lg property. in my opinion the best hound I have ever seen. I don't know if he would post any pics for he could care less about bragging. He knows he has a super dog and money can not buy him. An Oil man from Houston gave him a $10,000 ck and he gave it back I was there to witness myself. When we got back in the truck all he said was "I would spend twice that much to replace him". I will try to get some pics of Chuck Title: Re: Hound... Title: Re: Hound... Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 25, 2010, 12:48:05 pm Yes and no, Chris got her from our friend, Craig, who put her on here for a day or something nearly a year ago before Chris bought her which was stipulated in the add that he had dibs on the dog.
Title: Re: Hound... Post by: southtexasdogger on February 25, 2010, 01:18:55 pm Richard Thanks for the compliment on Chuck. He is a pretty outstanding Hound.
I am very blessed to own such a great dog and will probably never own another as good. Ol Chuck has found us alot of pork over the years. He is probably the smartest dog I've ever owned and I now have 23. I've owned no less than 12 dogs since I was 13 yrs old Im now 40. Thanks again Richard. Title: Re: Hound... Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 25, 2010, 01:32:37 pm How do you hunt chunk and what do you like most about him? Thanks for posting about him, put a pic up so we can see him.
Title: Re: Hound... Post by: southtexasdogger on February 25, 2010, 01:43:43 pm Matt I will send you a pic by email and you can post it.
I guess Im partial to Chuck because he is truely a dog you can hunt any style and depend on 100% of the time. I drive hunt off Rangers,Mini trucks. He can be casted out on old sign or dump him in the middle of sign. He will wind off truck. He will wind out of the Airboat. You can hunt him in a Subdivision. When your ready to go you can call him in. He has crossed the Colorado river and bayed 300yrds on the other side if I cant cross you can call him back. There may be some more great dogs like this I just have never seen one yet. I also have several really good YBMC that do an outstanding job. Another Plott/Cat cross thats almost as good as Chuck. I guess the one thing that scares me about the hound thing is losing the handle and having a harder time trash breaking them but ole chuck sounds like the real deal.
Anybody else got one they like? Jessie, Randy, Timmy, Cole, I know yall have a few that yall are partial too, lets see em. Title: Re: Hound... Post by: catchrcall on February 25, 2010, 02:10:06 pm do half hounds count?

Chuck will come straight to me. No one else thats hunting with me. He will look me in the eyes and go back out. I think he wants me to know its not him trashing. Title: Re: Hound... Title: Re: Hound... Post by: Bryant on February 25, 2010, 03:27:56 pm Is Annie a full Plott, and do you know what lines Chris/Craig?
Although I've never owned a full blood one that was any count, I've always had a sort-of facination with Plotts. In fact, I have a 4 month old Pocahontas Bred Plott named Matilda in my kennels now. Gonna raise her with my curs and see how she acts. Title: Re: Hound... Post by: Dexter on February 25, 2010, 03:40:11 pm Chris and Craig
Ditto what Bryant said. my Daddy's Kin folks in Virginia and N.C hunted plotts and Blevins hounds years and years back for bear mainly, stories have it that the Saddle backed ones or out of the old Blevins hounds that cant be found anymore i been looking for the saddle backed plotts My Daddy and I have been wanting one for years Dexter Title: Re: Hound... for youre self, also the Currs that i had on the ground. The Walker is quiet on track. I don't run any full hound But I Have no problem hunting with this Dog Title: Re: Hound... Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 25, 2010, 04:23:19 pm Look forward to the pics, that sounds lime kind I could own. I don't really want a dog that goes and goes looking for sign but will take a colder track than the curs but at the same time be smart enough to Not run a track that is too cold, there is a fine line there. The dog needs to have some brains....
Title: Re: Hound... Post by: Circle C on February 25, 2010, 04:26:45 pm I don't know anything at all about annie's lineage. I just know I like hunting her. If she took, she is currently bred to mandi's buck dog. I put my order in for 5 saddleback brindle females. We'll see if she was listening in about a month. ;D

Title: Re: Hound... Post by: robbiew2208 on February 25, 2010, 06:26:00 pm the guy i used to work for has got a plott gyp that ive seen run for 2o hours. straight i hated huntin behind that dog. she would put her nose down on a track and never pick it up to wind . that damn dog would keep us out all night and we would have to go to work with no sleep, my junky currs as he would call them would get tired and on the way back would wind a hog and we would actually catch some. but ive also seen a red tick that was a good a dog as ive ever seen. guess it depends on the dog
Title: Re: Hound... Post by: jsh on February 25, 2010, 06:28:18 pm Here's Sam, 3/4 Walker and 1/4 Bluetick. Has never been hunted with other hounds. Most of the time he is silent until he sees them. Rarely, he will open up in very hot sign. Bays loose, but sometimes he'll suprise me and catch.

Post by: pig snatcher on February 25, 2010, 06:41:19 pm Matt
I used to have a good little female plott dog, she would hunt what I consider medium to long range. Would check in, had a good nose but not cold by hound standards. She stayed bussy and could move a track fast. Was silent for the most part but would whine and yip a little if she was looking at him. Not gritty at all and had a lot of bottom. Would roll off a caght hog w/o missing a beat. She produced a lot of pigs for me. She was killed at around 2 1/2 years old so she never reached her full potential. I currently own an old walker female. I think Daisy is between 8 and 9 now. She will usually make a loop out about what you would call medium range, if she doesnt find anything she is going deep the next time. Has a medium nose for a hound. A little colder than the plott's. Basicly she is only going to take a track she can end and doesnt bother with real old stuff. She is open but doesnt boo hoo and bawl on a track. When she hits one she will move fast on it and open sparingly. Not gritty and has all the bottom you want and some more. Will roll off a caght hog until you get tired and grab her before the hog. LOL She has produced enough hogs to end hunger in some small country. ;) I will post pictures of them later if I can find some. Title: Re: Hound... Post by: Wmwendler on February 25, 2010, 07:03:11 pm Matt......Dad used to have a walker hound named Doc. He got him in the late 80's from a guy that hunted coons. The guy said the dog ran hogs and deer more than it did coons. So dad took him and that dog never ran a coon and he says it did'nt take much to break him off deer but he was a hog dog through and through. Long range and bottom. Not sure about the mouth because I was like 6-7 years old at the time and dad claims he can't remember but I think he was tight mouthed. The most unique thing about this dog was he could out swim any dog or hog. If he was close in the water it was a dead hog almost every time because he would catch up to them in the water, climb on thier head and drown them no matter what size. I saw it first hand one time in a big lake just climed right on top of a big boars head and drowned him. He was a damn smart dog too. Dad lost him one time and he showed up to this ladys house a few days after that hunt and dad was out of down and did'nt get back to pick the dog up untill two days later so ole' doc holed up in this ladys yard and was getting fed and never left. Then dad came to get the dog the lady was in the yard and saw doc pick his head up and listen and look off down the road. so she looked but did'nt see anything and she says doc jumped and cleared her 4 foot fence yard fence and run off down the road and met dad 500 yards away from her house....he heard the truck and recognised the sound.

Title: Re: Hound... Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 25, 2010, 07:09:42 pm Waylon that sounds like the kind of hound I could along with haha. I know people have said it and the longer I am around I believe it more and more everyday, a good dog is where you find it. I always hear about the curs so it is nice to see and hear about these hounds that produce the pork.

Title: Re: Hound... Post by: jsh on February 25, 2010, 08:13:41 pm Matt, I think the dog that Rockin Roo had was a dog named Zack that he bought down in Stockdale, Tx. I hunted with Jimmy a few times, but he had sold that dog by then.
Sam came from the Tx Hill Country (Medina). This old man ran nothing but hounds on hogs. They were all tough as nails and wide open. His dad was a coon dog reject that loved to trash on hogs and his momma was a rank old Bluetick/Walker bitch. Title: Re: Hound... Good looking dogs, look like a yella dog with some ear and a cat...I am gonna guess redbone and and leopard hound. That yellow dog looks like a buckskin Plott.I've hunted with some good hounds over the years.I admire the qualitys of a hound.Three of the best that come to mind.A Walker named Ace was real nice,a Plott named Ace real good dog,and a Plott named Rooster. All these dogs were pretty tight mouthed, but would be what most guys consider open on track. Also seen a fair share of slow trailing duds. But the good hounds I have seen were the best hog dogs I think I've ever seen. All three of the dogs I mentioned made my mutts look bad more than a few times.Just the endless want to,is what set at least the walker dog apart.(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f277/matt_aggie04/chuck_004.jpg) (http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f277/matt_aggie04/chuck_020.jpg) Title: Re: Hound... Post by: catchrcall on February 25, 2010, 08:33:58 pm Here's Blue. He's 1/2 Bluetick and 1/2 Blue Heeler. He's been a good dog for me, found a lot of hogs, and is really good about stopping one and then backing up to bay and keeping it there. He will roll out on his own after the hog is killed or tied, or sooner if you tell him to. He has just discovered that he can wind one from the back of a pickup. Time will tell if he's consistent at it. He's not perfect, he has a weakness for the occasional coon that we're working on, but he more than earns his keep as far as I'm concerned.

Post by: johnf on February 26, 2010, 06:48:27 pm this is my little plott jade.she is 3.she will hunt close till she takes a track when shes by herself.send another dog with her range to aprox 600yrd. she dose give some mouth but not bad.bays like a pen dog and knows how to stop a hog.has learned not to catch the hard way.i think alot of her but most other plotts around are much rangeier.i hunt her with my plott bmc cross dogs and will probably breed her to a bmc this year.even though she has papers im likein the cross dogs.

Post by: tnhillbilly on February 27, 2010, 06:29:39 pm I love the color of them crocket plotts, used to have some just like that one. my all time favorite hound was a redbone female named jill. I got her from a trade lot by accident. she was about 8 wks old. boy was carrying her, said i got you a good bear dog right here, i said how much? he said $40, just for giggles i said i'll give you $10, and wouldnt you know he said give me your money :o rolleyes, so i ended up with a red bone pup, dad took a liking to her and kept her as a yard dog, till she kept killing step moms cats ;D so i took her bear hunting, and she took to it like an old dog, so i started hunting her on hogs too, she was pretty rough, didn't open much but, was open. but man she was fast and could shut one down. caught a ton of hogs and bear with her. she was far from perfect but she showed me alot of game.
will try to find a couple pics. her career was cut short by a 200# bear. Title: Re: Hound... Post by: TieEmUpOrLeaveEm on February 27, 2010, 11:32:42 pm This is Smokey And Oppy. Smokey is a really nice young plott hound trail/bay is almost silent and gritty as a cobb. Oppy is my buddys Treein Walker is is round 7 yrs and is a very nice hound.
(http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac79/TieEmUpOrLeaveEm/015-1.jpg) This is a pic of me, my grandpa, lil sis and 2 friends on our way to ok to hunt in the middle is my robbert plott he was a hell of a hog dog. He could strike a track out of the truck of boat that most dogs couldnt take on the ground!!! Someone stole him 2 years ago!!!!!! The Blue plott on the left was his son was a year old in the pic and a hog killed him in ok on that trip. (http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac79/TieEmUpOrLeaveEm/1-19-201085533AM.jpg) This is blue gal she is a redistered english hound. She is 2.5 years old and a hell of a hog dog she has got heard, nose, speed, and stanima. I turned her loose one mornin and somethin went hay wire with her collar and when i found her 3 days later she was bayed... She was so give out i litterally caried her out and the hog was also weak and did not even put up a fight. (http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac79/TieEmUpOrLeaveEm/securedownload.jpg) It has been an honor and a prevelige to own and hunt with these hounds. I know by no means they were the best but they worked for me and produced many many hogs. So happy hunting to all and hope you enjoy the pics :) Title: Re: Hound... Just an observation but, of all the great qualities hog dogs of this caliber have (regardless of bread), the one thing that seems to impress their owners the most is their brains. They all usually claim that they are the smartest or one of the smartest dogs they have ever known. Just an observation. ;) Thanks for sharing the pictures folks! Title: Re: Hound... Post by: ETHHunters on February 28, 2010, 06:12:19 pm Ok Matt, I finally took a little time and got a few pictures of my houndxcurr dogs. All of these dogs are 1/2 and 1/2. The first one is a redbone X bmc. He's a year old and took him out yesterday for the first time. He ran his butt off all day. Once he figures out what he's supposed to be doing he is gonna be a nice dog. Probably more open than most people will like but not too bad for me. (http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv10/ETHHUNTERS/2010hunts009.jpg) The second dog is a July X bmc. She's about 1.5 years old and is really doing good for no more time in the woods then she's had. She has alot of hunt in her. I feel like she will break out at any time and really turn on. (http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv10/ETHHUNTERS/2010hunts012.jpg) The third dog is my pride and joy. I hope not but probably my once in a lifetime dog. He is as solid as they come. Not the fastest dog in the world but what he lacks in speed he make up with pure intellegence. He dont miss nothing. More bottom than most people will care to follow. He is b&t Xbmc. He's a 5 year old.(http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv10/ETHHUNTERS/2010hunts010.jpg) Heres a couple picks of some pups. They are 5/8 walker and 3/8 bmc. (http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv10/ETHHUNTERS/2010hunts013.jpg)(http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv10/ETHHUNTERS/2010hunts014.jpg)

Title: Re: Hound... Post by: rtrahan on March 01, 2010, 06:23:02 pm I have heard of this dog Chuck and not on ETHD either. He is already a legend it seems. Pretty neat to see him show up on this board. I guess bigfoot will be next. lol. Boarninja, This dog Chuck is a VERY VERY nice dog. I tryed everything I could to buy him about 3 weeks ago for ALOT of Money!!!!!! and got laughed at. I hunted with them on a ranch that did'nt have alot of sign. When we drove up to the ranch there was another dogger about to turn out So we all teamed up and hunted together. Southtexasdogger brought CHUCK and 1 BAD Black pit. He left the other dogs in the trailer. The other party had 6 YBMC's Chuck rode with us on the Ranger. We watched the YBMC's work for about 1 1/2 hours with no strikes. The curs were hunting 200 to 400 yrds out and nothing. We ran into the landowner and he said that a couple of hours ago he seen a big pig cross the road by an old well. So we headed that way trying to get any sign from the curs, nothing. We casted Chuck out within 10 min he hit the track and had a bay by himself 440 yards out. Only 2 curs went to the bay for help. The old boy that was hunting with us had a big Ridgeback catch dog that he turned out about 100 yrds out that would not catch. Boar about 300+. We walked in and seen him standing back baying. Very embarrasing for him. We went back and got Socks (the pit) and sealed the deal. Back to Chuck he is truley a Super,Super hog doggin machine. I have witnessed him several times now do amazing things. I or anyone else can't buy him but Southtexas has a litter of pups coming out of Chuck that should be very nice. I have my deposit already in on 2. He also has (3) 8 month old pups out of Chuck and a YBMC thats a really nice baydog. Two of them are really working great alot like Chuck being smart. For the Cur guys im not picking on yall It was a very windy day and conditions were tough but, in the long run Ol'Chuck pulled through again. If I was his owner I would retire him and sell pups all day everyday. Anyone thats ever hunted behind him knows what im talking about. Everyones 1st opinion towards Chuck is (Oh my gosh I have to have him How much?) and they get laughed at. Great post Matt [/quote] |
