Title: Re: Hunting Rig with Platform (Pic Heavy) Post by: slick on April 13, 2010, 09:12:57 pm altough i think its awesome and an absolute engineering marvel, i think where i hunt i would get that front end caught up on the uneven ground. do you take it off to travel between properties? again very impressive mate, super job.
Title: Re: Hunting Rig with Platform (Pic Heavy) Post by: POTTER on April 13, 2010, 10:00:32 pm No Slick, the platform stays on all the time. It is pretty flat out here in west texas so not too worried about ripping it off. We go up and down sand dunes and it does fine, but when you have the dogs riggin I drive pretty careful because I dont want to injure any dogs and I keep them chained til they start riggin because we have hit some pretty nasty ruts and if they were'nt chained then they would have bounced off. Thanks

Title: Re: Hunting Rig with Platform (Pic Heavy) Post by: treeingratterrier on April 14, 2010, 08:48:54 am How do the dogs see when its dark and you turn on the headlights??? I have a front mounted striking box on a 3500 dodge 4x4 and i made it too low, when i turn on the KC daylighters it blinds the dogs, I am going to redo it so the front platform sits in a bumper receier and then the strike box is at hood level so the headlights dont hit them, your truck is a lot different sloped than mine and i am wishing my dodge was made like it for sure. Nice rig, it you ever get to D and D in Seguin there are some gate latches that a dog can not open from the inside with there paws, called a Duffey gate latch, its spring loaded and has a knob and allows you to slam the dog box and have a bogger proof spring loaded door.. Which is you best strike dog off of the rig??? Do you rig any of the other dogs inside the dogbox on the top of the box to see if they will try to wind and strike from there>> Very nice rig and good luck hunting!!!
Title: Re: Hunting Rig with Platform (Pic Heavy) Post by: POTTER on April 14, 2010, 09:36:21 pm knightstockterrier
I hope this answers your light question about blinding your dogs. I have 2 small lights mounted on the front of the platform which prevents the dogs from being blinded also it helps me see where I am going. When I first built the platform I thought it was great until it was dark then with the dogs on the platform it prevented me from seeing where I was going, so I would highly recommend mounting some lights on your platform and get a toggle switch put in your cab. Most of the time I drive with the platform lights on only. Be careful on putting your strike box too high because the dogs will hender your view, but be careful on setting the strike box too low because you may hit a low spot and rip the box off and injure your dogs. Thanks for the duffey gate latch idea, I will have to check into that. On the question on the best stike dog it varies on who I am with and some days one will strike better than others. I dont put dogs on the top box very often because my truck has a nine inch lift on it and the dogs really don't like jumping off of it plus it increases the risk of injury for them. Hope this answered some of your questions. |
