Title: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: uglydog on July 17, 2008, 03:14:01 pm I was reading an online hunting magazine when I came across an advertisement for hog removal, went to the website- I though it would be interesting to share since the most recent discussion on genetics and such. I got a kick out of it since we got some discussing Corgis,Boxer, Dobermans and such.
So here ya go Cody! check out the duck-hog dogs ;D http://www.hogstoppers.com/pictures.html notice the picture with the pigs in the trees! Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Black Gold on July 17, 2008, 03:21:00 pm There's all kinds out there! ;D

Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Bryant on July 17, 2008, 04:28:45 pm I saw a guy at Uncle Earls this year parked down close to the entrance that had 6 or 8 black labs pups on a chain for sale. He claimed he had been breeding these for a while, and they were heck on hogs.
I couldn't help but notice when we pulled by as we were leaving Sunday afternoon that his chain was still pretty well stocked.. Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: elliscountyhog on July 17, 2008, 04:42:44 pm I was baying a hog once in my pasture with some pups and the nighbors golden lad followed us out ther and i figured what the heck, well as the pups bayed in a pond i started calling out and i got every dog out except the lab, she stayed bayed well into the night as i fell asleep and it was her first time to see a hog, if she wasnt so old i would have kept her and added to the pack. ;D
Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: GitDatHawg on July 17, 2008, 05:47:15 pm Yeah i been to that site b4. i said the same thing..... labs? But i bet they work great. works for those guys. they seem to be "Stopping Hogs"
Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Noah on July 17, 2008, 06:14:50 pm I know of quite a few guys using labs in S Florida, and they all do pretty well....known for being pretty rough. I just don't like the "fat lap dog look" ;D
How's this for an outcross? (http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/989/57194674ck9.jpg) (http://img291.imageshack.us/my.php?image=57194674ck9.jpg) Crossed with.... He's 8yo now and still can outrun a deer :o This female I've got is like watching a bobcat move, not to mention she's been catching hogs from 6 mnth to present... getting better every day ;D Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: gardner32 on July 17, 2008, 07:18:32 pm my main strike dog is most lab in her. i like hunting with them. she is a really gritty dog too. we keep her in the house most of the time. she is an extremely smart dog. ellis you knew i wouldnt miss out on this post lol.

Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Cull Buck on July 18, 2008, 07:20:34 am I have a 4 yr old chocolate lab that will catch and hold a hog pretty darn good. Twice she has single handedly found and caught a hog in the marsh while we were putting out decoys before a duck hunt. Thank goodness they were both squealers or I would have never known.
One time on the way back from a duck hunt I got a call from some buddies that were working some pups in a pen and told me to stop by. My lab was going nuts running around the pen trying to get in. I let her in and she instantly ran right past the pups and locked up tight. Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Circle C on July 18, 2008, 08:11:31 am Speaking of labs.
About 7 years ago I was dropping off some young catahoulas to Tommy Strange down in Alvin. We put the young dogs in his baypen, and I happened to have my pet lab with me at the time. My lab was baying from the outside of the pen while the young dogs were inside trying to figure out what they where supposed to be doing. My lab ended up catching the hog through the panels. Maybe she was trying to defend me? maybe she liked to bay hogs? I guess I will never know. I never tried her around another hog after that. Now in the last week, I have had a visitor to my barn that runs half lab - half catahoula around the Lake Charles area, and another friend in South Texas that is hunting what he calls Labrahoulas. I have never hunted around one, but apparently they work for some. Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: aladatrot on July 18, 2008, 01:30:40 pm Here's a photo of one of my fluffy stock dogs working a sow with a cat gyp. Granted, the cat gyp is more "in your face", and the Aussie dog was a looser bay. Aussie dog wants to get to the head, and hold the attention there. The only bad thing about using a dog like this is her propensity to bring the pig to you. If it runs, she is trying to turn it around and bring it back to you. She got catchy a little while back and got in trouble for it. This put a kink in her baying at the hog for a bit. She's back to baying again, and both she and the hog are as happy as larks.
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee228/aladatrot/dustilena.jpg) All that fluff just looks out of place with a hog in the picture :O) M Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Boar Collector on July 18, 2008, 01:50:37 pm The other day I was working two catahoula pups in the baypen and our little miniature pincher
came off the porch when she heard the other dogs barking and squeezed through a hole in the baypen and went right to baying with the catahoula dogs like she had been doing it all her life. I told my buddy I was gonna take her to Uncle Earls this year lol ;D Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Critter on July 18, 2008, 02:10:58 pm Our family border collie will find'em, bay'em, and catch the little ones. He was my first hog dog "by accident." He doesn't bark enough though. More of a herding style of bay I guess might call it. Anyway, he doesn't get to go much anymore. The rest of the familys too scared of what might happen to him. He mostly runs traps with me now and caught one that was making an escape while loading from trap to trailer last summer. He loves a hog and is smart as a whip.

Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: clint on July 19, 2008, 02:09:08 pm he was tiny,, he couldnt have wieghed over 10 lbs,,, the guy brought him in holdin him in his arm like a lap dog,, ;D ;D
Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Wmwendler on July 19, 2008, 04:12:26 pm Labrahoula lol..........Some family freinds had the neighbors lab slip in on a litter of Cur pups a long time ago.....Only one pup was tainted but he turned out ok and liked to work hogs and cows. Ended up being a very big dog but they kept him as a pet or 3rd string working dog and did'nt hunt him much because they had a yard full of real dogs that he could not hang with when things got serious.
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b364/Waylon8885/NewtonranchHunt-1.jpg) U can see how big he was next to a regular sized Cur. We had a Lab/Pit that we found starving on the side of the road and took him in as a charity case. We Used him as a catch dog some and was pretty handy in some situations, but big hogs would make him bay, which usually just got the Curs cut up because he would let go of big hogs and leave them hanging in a bad spot. Down in South Texas a Buddy of my dads used to Manage the Herradura Ranch and back then he had a Jack Russel terrier (Tripod) with three legs cause one got big off by a hog. When the Curs had a hog bayed in the prickly pair they would turn tripod loose and he would crawl in there and make that hog leave out of there so they could shoot the hog. Speaking of Border collies.......On one of the ranches we hunt the manager has a border collie and allot of times we will bay hogs down on a creek below the headquarters and that dog will come down and bay with our dogs. But like critter said, he does not bark much and usually just screws things up. I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I've been really studying stock dogs lately because I'm ready to get a couple of my Aussies working stock. I'm going to be training them myself this time because I don't have the money just laying around to send them off to a trainer like we did a few years back (having 12 dogs is different than having one). Anyway, I've been reading up on theory and have come across the explanation of the "herding drive" that our Aussies and your Border Collies have. It's actually "Prey Drive". The difference in the herding dogs and a cur dog is that the herding dog is trying to run the prey back to man. They have been bred for this behavior, but the drive is the same. This is based on the opinions of the herding dog folks. They were an accident but made jam up dogs.
Also know an old fellow that has a bunch of 1/2 wolf, 1/4 pitt, 1/4 catahoulas. Rather nasty creatures, dont have much nose, dont hunt real hard, but you can send em to a bay or race and they will have him stretched or dead when you get there. LOL Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Noah on July 21, 2008, 05:42:45 pm I know a fellow that has two walker/labs. They are built like a walker w/ a black labs coat. Two of the wolves look like wolves, big dogs about 80lbs. plus, the other looks like a brindle wolf and for some strange reason he wags his tail up and down instead of side to side, LOL Most of the pups off of them look like great big black cyotes. They serve their owners purpose but I personaly wouldnt want one because they realy dont hunt that good and are rather nasty animals. I will get a picture of them if I have the camera handy next time I hunt with him. Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Noah on July 22, 2008, 08:07:29 am That's funny... when you say "nasty" what do you mean? Bad personality?
Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: clint on July 22, 2008, 08:11:39 am i sure would like to see a wolf cross to ;D
Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Cull Buck on July 22, 2008, 08:54:04 am How nasty are we talking??? Some of the guys I hunt with are nasty so they might get along. ;D
Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Black Gold on July 22, 2008, 11:29:35 am Figure this must be an Airdale cross of some sort.....The dog is owned by one of our customers from Korea. He is the only sale I've made of a 2XL cut vest....there is quite a language barrier so I can't get much info other than he needs a 2XL vest and he loves killing hogs....he also must have a handful of them because he ordered 8 vests at a time all in 2XL size!

since that is what was one of the contributing breeds in my own dogs. Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Black Gold on July 22, 2008, 03:00:47 pm Here is a staghound X bull terrier from Australia that is used as a running catch dog.....
Krystal, Looking at her kinda makes you wonder what our stag crosses are gonna look like doesn't it??? ;D (http://www.boardogs.com/Pupsforsale_files/walsh_0512.jpg) Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Rowdy on July 22, 2008, 03:08:43 pm I have 2 airedale/bulldog crosses that are 10 months old starting to catch and 2 full airedales that are 3 month old.
Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: pig snatcher on July 22, 2008, 03:34:40 pm Didnt know airedales were an alternative breed? Thought they were the norm.
Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: uglydog on July 22, 2008, 03:56:01 pm Pig Snatcher, They are not a cur and they are not a hound which are you two most common types. They fit into the terrier breeds which is not the norm for hog hunting (even though tey were bred for large game), I like to think they are Normal, but I often get ythat look from people ;)
Cody, that might even be Toooooo ugly for me! :o Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: pig snatcher on July 22, 2008, 04:07:26 pm A good friend of mine is a big fuzzy dog fan, has several full bloods and crosses. Ugly things have kinda grown on me too.
Have run them on hogs and deer with good results.(deer dogging is still populare here) Sent you a pm. Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Black Gold on July 22, 2008, 04:59:23 pm Dont know much on Airedales....I know they're not a super rare dog, but thought ya'll may like seeing a Korean hog dog dressed up.....from what I can understand by his text I thought this dog was crossed with something else....maybe not though....
Krystal, Yeah....that Stag cross would add a whole new level to the "Ugly Dog" theme! :D Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: Mike on July 22, 2008, 05:46:07 pm Here is a staghound X bull terrier from Australia that is used as a running catch dog..... Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: rabbiter on July 22, 2008, 10:39:39 pm Stock collie type dogs are commonly used either crossed or pure for "finding" hogs here in New zealand .Labs cross are also a common breed ,crossed with either a boxer ,bull mastiff,or some form of bull .I have a pit bull x lab bitch which can find a handy pig ...But she just doesn't know the word BAY!!!!!I'll dig out a picture as shes a very nice looking bitch which I will in time put to a heading dog (stock dog),these pups would be most suitable for type of hog hunting here .
Title: Re: Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting Post by: longshot on July 23, 2008, 05:01:03 pm I have talked with the people from Fredericksburg since we are neighbors and he is the REAL DEAL. He hunts only labs and produces a lot of hogs!

Climbed a 6ft holding pen to get to one when she was 6 months old! But its to hot for her here in TX for running hogs. We tried shaving her but the heat still was too much. It's a shame because she is gritty little girl!
