Title: Need advice
Post by: BULLMASTER on April 08, 2010, 06:21:54 pm
I have a BMC that is 1 1/2 yrs old and will find and bay the hell out of a hog,the problem is that the minute I walk up where he sees me he wants to stand behind me and bark.I have watched him from the tops of hills in the panhandle and this dog will stay all over a hog until I show up up to do the deed then he wants to hide behind  me.Anyone ever had this problem? Its a first for me and I have no idea on how to correct it.

all i could think of is to put him on a leash and show him a pig and make him stay in front of you and just pet him and show him that it is alright to be up there.

What about a pen? I got a male that wants to check in when I walk up. He will go back but it leaves a hole for the pig. In the pen he will bark then look around. Had a sow knock him in the air when he turned in the pen. The next time in the pen he did not turn sideways in front of the pig. Get a sow bigger than your dog and put them in a pen and you stay out. That dog will learn to stay on the pig.

Couple of things come to mind.

First...have you (or do you) shoot around the dog?

Second...might be a maturity thing.  I agree, I would check him in a pen and see what happens.

Third...Just how close to the bay are you getting?  I assume close enough so that he can see you.  Why not cut your catch dog just out of sight a few times and see if that doesn't help?

Just ideas...

My sons old dog used to do this only with my son. He was all business with me because I was always all business with him. I think it had to do with age and the "pet factor" with his dog. He corrected it by simply scolding him when he did it. He also started treating him like a hunting dog instead of a pet. By the time he was about 2 and a half he was solid as they come at a bay and ended up being a dang good hog dog.
