Title: I never hunt and wat to get started.
Post by: wannahunt on April 20, 2010, 09:43:34 am
I got me a 1yr old Black mouth cur. I want to see how well he hunts. I am looking for a group or someone close to dallas who will show me the ropes and let me tag along with my dog.

He is a very brave dog and wheighs 75lbs. He likes to play with the biggest dogs in the dog park. Great Danes are his favorite. I take him to the dog park twice a week and he only got in one fight. That darn boxer never should tried to hump him. He had the boxer pined in less than a second. Aside from that he gets on great with other dogs. He is very protective of the house and doesnt let anyone get close.

I willing to make a bit of a drive. Maybe 2 hours away. Also aside from a cut vest what other gear do you recommend i get?

I wouldn't worry about a vest just yet, lots of folks don't even put a vest on their curs.  Just a cut collar would be fine.  You may not even need that.  You might see if somebody has a baypen you could put him in to see if he has any interest in hogs before you jump into buying gear.

Dude, go find a pen with a pig! You turn him loose without a clue he may run off chasing squirrels. First make sure he hates pigs. I have three dogs they love running through the woods. Two want to find pigs. The other one runs until they find a pig and then goes and sits under the truck! When you put him in a pen he wants nothing to do with the pig. Some want to hunt and others do not. You can waste everyone's time taking him on a hunt. Save your own time and put him in a pen then you can put a couple dogs in to see how he works with other dogs. You can't make a dog hunt. My wife says I just find dogs as crazy as me. There is a lot of truth in that!

Yes, but it is near Houston. Do you have a place to build one?

As much as I love the country life my wife is a city girl. This is like green acres in reverse. So no room for a pen at my place.

I live about 45 minutes east of Dallas, if I can find some hogs you can try him out in my pen. You could prolly do some hunting with us too. If you have the money shocking collar would be a good investment in case he starts to trash in the woods.

My wife used to give me a hard time about hunting too. But then I brought my truck home. So she could decide what to say to her friends. Either I have a crazy out of control husband or my husband loves to hunt and he even takes the kids with him so I have time to relax. It was up to her. She made her friends envious about all her time she has to relax. It is all about choices.

one I do not have a place to hunt yet. two I work grocery retail. Three nice truck. four My jeep is nicer LOL

I am sure your jeep is nicer, that is the point. My truck does not have shiney paint, not even a spot of chrome, no carpet, no radio, and no a/c. But it does have the factory camo, a 24v electrical system, and it puts out lots of diesel smoke. I am telling you how to get your green acres. I live too much in the city for me. We are looking for a new house further out. But if you like it in the city that is cool too. But I wanted to get out and make it my wife's decision. A truck like mine is not easy to get but it is the attitude. It took my wife about three years to decide we should move. It took one truck, four dogs, and me spending more time with friends in the country than at home. I was given a limit of how far I was allowed to move from a mall but I will push it too ;D I am just trying to help you.

I'm also new to hog hunting with dogs! I am tryin to find people to hunt with in my area. I have two Catahoula pups, both have seen hogs but will not be getting trained until the summer, and even then I will only have one of them as the other is going to be a little to immature to get trained up. If anyone is in the Texas Panhandle Area I would be more than willing to split costs and help out in any other way I can just so long as I can go hunting and bring my pups along!
