Title: What should I do?
Post by: realtree25 on April 27, 2010, 01:05:24 pm
I have a ridgeback pup bout 9months old. He bays really good in a pen but I cant get him to hardly leave the four wheeler when we take him hunting. How much more time should I give him?

I agree with both of the two previous posts, 9 months old is really young and you should not expect him to act like a 5 year old dog. Give him time.

I got a 1yr old cat. He won't bay in a pen. He loves to run with the dogs. But when they find a pig he goes and sits under the truck. I will give him about another year. If he aint hunting by two yrs I will find someone that wants a pet that is good at licking pots. But I hear males can up to two years to hunt. But yours is baying in a pen. Just take him to the pen with other dogs and take him hunting with the other dogs. You at least knows he will do something besides lick pots.

If he already knows what a hog is, then take him out of the pen. No reason to keep putting him in a pen if you want him to find a hog on his own. I would use the pen to get a dog to bay then put it in the woods. Make some mock hunts. Drag a pig and stake it out. Put the dog on the track.

TRY SOME JUMP OUT RACES, AND DRAG THEN TIE A HOG OUT TO A TREE AND LET HIM TAKE THE SCENT, BE PATIANT AND HE WILL FIGURE IT OUT. THEY SHOULD SHOW SOME PROMISE HERE AND THERE BUT NOT EVERY HUNT WHEN YOUNGER THAN 2.

thanks for the info guys. I was thinking the same thing just wanted to know what others thought. Sometimes it just gets discouraging putting the time and feed in one and they dont pan out. thanks again.

With my ridge backs it takes time.

My males start very slow and build up to hunt around 2.5 to 3 years old.

My females come on strong  as pups  and slow way down for some reason at about 12 to 18 months old then come back in around 2 to 2.5 years old.

Give it time and keep working them they are very smart dogs. Not all follow this exactly but it is pretty close
