Title: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: BIG BEN on April 28, 2010, 09:12:15 am Just wondering what people do when the dogs have a hog bayed in bad spots where a human cant get to? Its only happened to us one time this year. What do you do, send the CD's anyway? Try to break the bay and hope they bay in a better spot? Call the dogs off? Remember this is spots where you cant get in there and get it done. And if you do get there you are in iminent danger and almost guarenteed to get hurt.

Being in a few bad situations opens your eyes... that's why I run loose baying dogs and lead the catch dog in as close as possible. Been there, done that. ;) Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: BigAinaBuilt on April 28, 2010, 04:00:37 pm Here in Hawaii we have alot of pigs that use the same hollowed out tree or the same cave and will lure the dogs into it because they know they have the advantage of their back end is covered and the dogs have to take it on head to head. Usually in this scenerio the dogs will take turns picking shots until we get there with the gun. Here is a video of a nice boar that had claimed many victims that had given his cave a try. My cousin had tried this Laho'ole (Barr) on a few occasions and came home with a few cuts and hurt egos each time so he asked my uncle and a couple of his friends to join him on this try. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KARrBHXalo
Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: makenbeans on April 28, 2010, 05:01:05 pm Nice hog @ the Islands.
I would have sent like 15 pits into the thick and caught the hog...JK. I hunt 1 dog so i usually shoot the hog if its a bad one. Always carry some kind of fire arm. jmo. Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: make-em-squeel on April 28, 2010, 07:46:14 pm Thats the fastest way to kill a cd, and any curs that try to catch after the bulldog hits! Bust the Bay! I normally cut the bulldog before i see the hog but i need to stop doing that b/c it only takes one hunt to ruin it all......
Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: BIG BEN on April 28, 2010, 08:52:33 pm We never cut the CD loose without seeing the hog or being with in 10 yards of the bay. As for the gun's I personally dont carry one but I probilly should, guns= shot dogs to me, I dont like the idea of shooting a dog Id rather them get killed buy the hog not by me. I was wondering what everyone else would do in the situations. Id personally would break the bay I dont think I would be able to call my dogs off they dont know quit.

Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: Bryant on April 29, 2010, 08:00:44 am Scared has nothing to do with it. Some people have more respect for their dogs (or realize they're worth more) than to intentionally put them into a situation to get beat up or killed. I know injuries happen and are an unfortunate part of the game but if I'm there and able, pride won't stand in the way of me taking other means necessary to protect my pack if I can foresee a problem.
Unless you think your dogs can't stop the hog and bay it again, why not bust the bay? We bayed a boar in the middle of a drainage culvert one time. Tried everything with no luck to get him or the dogs out. Finally we tied a rope to the catchdog, sent him in and when he caught we pulled the whole group back out. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: BIG BEN on April 29, 2010, 08:18:38 am Just as Bryant said, scared has nothing to do with it. Im not saying Im the baddest SOB around but I sure as hell aint scared of any hog, Ive had bears jump out of trees at me and Ive never backed down. I dont like to put my dogs in situations that there is no way of coming out on the winning side. This topic is more like "who has common sense in bad situations" rather than "whos scared and who isnt"
Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: TShelly on April 29, 2010, 10:04:56 am Yeah we've been in some pretty tough binds before.. Mostly the problem being with caves and washed out creek banks... 2 of the propertes have caves on them that the hogs run to every year.
two stories come to mind, In the first instance we did like Bryant an tied 2 tie ropes to the bull dog, pulled out As many of the cur dogs as we could. Then we sent the CD in and pulled everyone out. That one was about a 200# barr the next time was alot scarier! We were hunting Big e's lease in Trinity and there is a bad washout at the head of a creek in a youpon/pine thicket. Every year it never fails we end up with a boar hog or 2 that will run to it.. It's relatively easy to get a lariat rope over the hogs mouth usually an then you can get down in there and catch the hog. Well this time we had abt 5 cur dogs down and they bayed a big barr in the wash out. We were in the process of dropping the lariat rope on him when the cur dos got 'froggy' and darted trying to catch him! He was wreaking havoc and cutting dogs down left and right, we had no choice but to cut the CD loose or start losing dogs! We turn him loose, he catches the barr does about 5 circles and then dissappers 15 feet into the bank with every dog following! We could feel the ground moving under our feet as the hog kept trying to dislodge the dogs.. 10 minutes later we finally were able to cut away the matted youpon roots and dig a decent size hole. We got a tie rope over his whetters and was able to turn him where his ass was sticking out towards daylight! Jim ed and I crawled in and drug him out. He went 340#'s!! We've had to bust a few bays of big boar hogs bayed in Wild Lemon Thickets that were sooo bad you couldnt pay me any sum of $$$ to go into lol Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: cajunl on April 29, 2010, 10:08:33 am If the dogs get in that spot.....I can too with effort.
Be it swim, crawl, beat briars. It may take a while but I will get to them. If they had a hog bayed on the moon.....I would find a way to get to them! Title: Re: Hogs bayed in bad spots? Post by: coach on April 29, 2010, 10:42:46 am You all absolutly right. We all take chances but at what cost? Our lives? The lives of our dogs? We have all done crazy things hopefully we learn from them, and figure out a better solution. Using the rope or a long lead helps lots of times. I have dropped the pits from the truck to find them burried in an old brush pile, hogs and dogs stuck in trees in tank in near freezing water, or found the dog in a culvert with one open end and grated on the other having to drop in nearly on top of them. Creeks, rivers, washouts it is dangerous but to tell you the truth I hope we all have enough sense to know when too bad is too bad. We can replace a working dog but there is only one of you guys, hope we use some sense in those scenerios.
