EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

ive been on the site for a couple of months now so i thought id introduce myself. my name is jarrad and im from north queensland, australia. we do things a bit differently so i have been enjoying reading and seeing how you do things over there. i used to just use running catch dogs but im moving away from that and just own a couple of catahoulas.

i caught this big fella only 10 mins from home, just how i like them. he was about 90kg dressed weight. i dont what that is in pounds but there is about 2.2 pounds to the kilogram.

and this one was probably only 3mile from the top one but a couple of months apart.

this boar was an absolute thrashing machine.

this is my old dog goose working from the back of the ute. he held many boars over 200lb one out and wasnt a bad finder either. sadly he was run over after getting out to chase a bitch on heat. i recently had a litter by him so he isnt lost altogether. he was a dane X bullterrier/staghound.

the master and apprentice. this ended up being the last boar goose ever caught. bob (the cat) was about 4months old.

Jarrad, welcome to ETHD. I enjoy seeing pics and stories from other hog hunters around the world. I've got a couple of questions for you. Why are you getting away from the running catch dogs? Are you going to bay and shoot or lead-in a catch dog? Also, where did your catahoulas come from? Thanks.

Nice looking dogs.  Judging by the way you're dressed in some of the pics, looks like you hunt in some pretty warm weather.  Anything you do special to avoid your dogs from overheating?  Always looking for tips.

mike- im moving away from rcd's to try something different and im hoping to be able to work in the heat a bit more. i spent 6 years as an exlposive detection dog handler in the australian army, so i enjoy seeing all kinds of working dogs doing what they were bred to do.
i plan on shooting with bay dogs or using my mates rcd's as walk in cd's if they come for a run with me and if i can pull it off i will try to grab them by hand (just for adrenalins sake)
my male dog bob is from a kennel over here called currant and i think stems from a dog called oaks run cayo conch. my bitch named dolly is from a kennel called mopoke which comes from camp-a-while  foundation stock. both dogs really look the business so far and have impressed me.

the dog in the photo is a bloodhound X bullarab. the bullarab is a popular australian rcd. it is said they come from a german shorthaired pointer/greyhound X bullterrier, but there are many arguments around the camp fires concerning this.
texas j- i do like the black mouth curs but from what i have read they are probably a bit too cold nosed for around here. i would love to try one out but there are none in oz and it costs between  $8- 10 ,000 to import a dog from the US, pretty expensive experiment hey.
jsh-it gets super hot around here and can reach temps between 90-120 and thats in winter (no joke) there is also the humidity and that is what really shakes your dogs. we cool the dogs off in dams etc between hogs and try to work them off the ute. you need to know your dogs limits and pull them up when they get too hot.

it only works at the end of winter when there is no grass left if you try it at this time of year the spear grass is way too savage. you end up with more holes in you than a second hand dart board! haha

Jarrad, I saw that first picture of Bob and I knew he was out of cayo, I own a son and grand daughter of him.
Donna Matvejs owned him and lived right down the street from me, but unfortunately she passed on a few years ago.
She raised some damn fine dogs, so bob has definitely got good blood in him.

nice pics and nice comentaries. I would love to hear more on the diferences in techniques used between here and there.

 I know what you mean about the heat and humidity... had quite a few bad experiences with it. Keep us updated on how your catahoulas progress.

 cayo is his grandsire his dams side by semen import. he had a rough start to life. a day after i got him the dog next door grabbed him through the fence and ripped him up a bit. he recovered well but is a bit funny around strange dogs ( cant blame him for that)
