I was talking to a guy about a dog and this is what took place. Got the times off my cellphone.

3:33 I called him and got his address, told him I would be there in 1.5-2 hrs. He is at home with his wife at this time.

4:03 He calls and asks if I left yet, told him I was just leaving and would be there in about 1 hr

5:10 He calls to see were I am at, says he is tied up shoeing horses 41 miles from his house. He will have his wife get the dog for me.

Red flags going up. Do the math with going to do a job 41 miles away. says he thought he would be back in time.

Dog looks to be in good shape. Actually heavier than would be expected.

Dogs teeth are worn more than would be expected for a dog this age, but it could just be this dog.

Dog has collar with a different name and two different phone #'s

Ask his wife the dogs name - she says she does not know anything about his dogs. She is not friendly at all.

I call the guy and ask him when he will be home, tell him I will wait around. He asks if there is a problem, blah, blah, blah, there is the dog if I want it. No he will not take a post dated check, does not like messing with checks.

I ask wife if she minds if I park outside the gate, she doesn't care.

I go get the #s off the dogs collars and start doing some calling.

Guy calls says I am making her nervous by being parked across the street. I am actually driving off during this phone call.

6:20 Guy calls and wants to know why I am checking up on him. Says he does not like being checked on like he is a kid. Conversation went south at this point. (the #'s on the collar are someone he huints with and it has gotten back around to him)

The biggest point he kept telling me was that I knew were he lived so I should have no problem giving his wife the cash. Said he had someone else that was coming to get the dog and that they said as long as they knew were he lived they did not care if they met him or not. I told him I did not feel that way.

I have left off locations,  names and details that would point fingers at specific individuals.

Rule number one...dont buy a dog without first hunting the dog.

Rule number two....if it looks like sh@t and smells like sh@t...it probably is sh@t.

Rules number three....See rule number one.

Reminder: If your buying a dog for a few hundred dollars...it aint a hog dog more than likely.

This is one of those situations that you just can't say 'yea' or 'nay' on unless you were actually there seems to me. I can see your point and from what you've written I probably would have been dubious of this guy too. Also I don't think you said what the price on the dog was.....this could factor in heavily. I'd say you probably did the right thing by not getting tangled up with this guy over a dog and money.....after all, he DID deceive you about his whereabouts.

I agree with the rules but not the reminder. I have several dogs that were LESS than " a few hundred dollars" that will sure enough find you some hogs. They may not be the best dogs out there, but they get the job done good enough for me to keep feeding them. Granted, It most likely wont be a "FINISHED" hog dog for a few hundred, but it could be well on its way. JMO

the way i see it is if i sale a dog for a few hundred bucks there is a reason for it being cheap not meanin he is junk but not fittin my style but i also won't give a trial unless i know the person will offer a hunt with myself to show the dog so all in all you did the right thing you walked away saving yourself from a major headache

I hope when the phone numbers don't jive you call. It could be my dog. Any honest person should understand

for a couple hundread bucks the dog better do something help bay, catch something. If you sell someone a dog for that much that dont do anything your a crook and better watch your back hog hunters run in pretty small circles and you never know when youll meet again. I wouldent even give away a dog that dont do anything, and for them 1 to 2 thousand dollar dogs they better be pretty special. Ive never baught a dog just bread from the ones friends have given me long ago and ive never sold a pup eather just give to fellow hunters they arent anything special but we catch pleanty of hogs. Seen too many baught dogs turn out bad, better do your homework before shelling out the dough jmo

 I wouldnt take a post dated check. If you dont have the money, why would you try and buy a dog?



    If no one said "hey, thats my dog, it isnt for sale" then it would be a problem. Sounds like there is more to the story. Strange that he left knowing you would be there pretty quick. Maybe he left b/c he has been stood up before.

Hunt the dog before you own it.

Chuck had the cash in hand but do to the circumstances he offered post dated check as a security measure to protect himself if the dog wasn't what it was supposed to be. If the dog did work out Chuck offered to come back next day and give him cash after he tried him in a 70 acre pen.

I don't mind taking a post dated check on a dog for trial. I have never been written a bad check on a dog from a true dog hunter or bulldogger yet.  I think Chuck made the right call and handled it much better than I would have. 

I am the one who called the numbers on the collar with different name as a courtesy to another hunter. If that fella has a problem with that then I will be happy to meet him and talk about it.
