Title: Best dog u ever owned? Post by: HIGHWATER KENNELS on May 12, 2010, 10:11:02 pm What is or was the best dog yall have ever owned. Mine was a yellow cur dog, bought him from a feller when he was 4 yrs old. I remember it like it was yesterday, I had went there to buy another dog but I seen this male dog and asked him if he was for sale, The man said no, so rite then I knew it was the one I wanted. Well, this was when i was 20 yrs old so it was 14 yrs ago and I had saved up 1,000 dollars and the ole man looked to be sittin on hard times so with me asking him about 100 times what he wanted for him, he finally said 700. Before he could change his mind, I handed him the money and loaded the dog up.. Now I had no idea what the dog was and he did not give me no trial, but I just had this feelin... From the first time I brought him in the woods, it was like he could understand what I wanted and how I liked to hunt. This dog was amazing, smart , and knew how to cover territory not just run around and waste alot of energy.. He would make 20-30 minute rounds and no matter where I would be he would make a loop and run rite out by me and be gone again. That dog saved me a many of times with hogs, at that time I did not have a catch dog, heck I didnt know what one was cause my grandfather never used them. I will always remember yeller. Yeller died when he was 8 years old on a 400 pd barr , I am still tryin to find one with all the qualities he had, He had it all....

Hands down best dog I have ever owned. He would hold a hog at bay in any situiations no matter what. I hunted him for 5 years found me lots of hogs. I am pleased with the dogs I have now but they are no comparison to Jethro. If he was barking he was stareing at a hog. He had a lot of stanima and would get and younder a findem. RIP Jethro!

Title: Re: Best dog u ever owned? Post by: waylon-N.E. OK on May 13, 2010, 04:22:08 pm Mine was little mixed breed dog we called amber, she showed up out here as a pup and we just kept her. She would bay cattle, hogs, tree coons, keep varmints away, work my trap line with me, put up chickens at night walked my kids to the school bus waited for them to get home, watched them like they were her's, adopted and helped me raise lots of pups. When we went to bed she would go on patrol around the house and keep things in order. Don't know what she was made up of, she looked like a reddish colored mini bmc. Got way to many stories of awesome things she did to help us out to post them. R.I.P. ol'girl :'(

Title: Re: Best dog u ever owned? Post by: rdjustham on May 15, 2010, 01:37:55 am Tipper, yellow FL cur dog. buddy gave her to me when i unknowingly bought my new house which was right next door to him. he was running all males and she was give to him. finished as they come gritty but smart was 9 years old and made plenty of young dogs look stupid. my new born son was her pup and no one not even momma could get close to him if she was with without my say so. people live next door (not my buddy) are f*cking crazy and hate hunting dogs, poisoned her to the point i had to have her put down. they think they were helping her by throwing junk food over fence. now they call animal control and the cops everyday on the other dogs. im famous..lol RIP TIPPER good dog taken for no reason..
Title: Re: Best dog u ever owned? Post by: Pudge on May 15, 2010, 08:56:23 am The best dog I ever had was an AB named Sam. Seemed like there was'nt anything he couldn't catch or whip. He was always looking to please me. He also was a very good watchdog and was very protective of our place. Lost him many years ago and still miss him. I've had a lot of dogs since then but none of them have measured up to Sam.

Title: Re: Best dog u ever owned? Post by: crackerc on May 16, 2010, 09:47:53 am Without any question, my old Dixie female. I have seen this dog do things I have never seen another dog do. I have hunted her in front of and behind other "good" dogs and her find hogs they didn't even know were in the woods, and do it on a regular basis. She could wind off the truck, you could put her on a track, or free cast her and she would do all three equally well. Never barked at anything but a hog, handled better than any dog I have ever seen, very intelligent and just knew more about hogs than I ever will. Plus, she would catch when the catch dog got there.
As I hunted her by herself 99% of the time, she learned how much pressure to apply when bayed, to keep that hog (s) bayed. Some hogs required more pressure, some less and she always seemed to know how much pressure to apply. She had an uncanny knack at keeping the hogs attention. I have never seen another dog that controlled the hog like she did. Hard to explain but awesome to watch. We averaged baying/catching/cutting 100-150 BOAR hogs (not counting sows, shoats or barrs) per year with her for about 7 years. Thats a lot of hogs. Some of the guys I hunted with used to joke I could take her to central park in New York city and she would bay a hog "somewhere". She just always seemed to find and bay a hog when other dogs failed. I could write a book on this dog, but most people wouldn't believe it. I just feel fortunate that I was able to own and hunt her, so I know what a REAL good dog is. Title: Re: Best dog u ever owned? Your absoluty right...the best ones are usually the ones we have lost. I lost my heart...my Jay Jay, a few months back and tomorrow will be just as hard as yesterday and just as hard as the day I lost him. I help take care of my husbands dogs and pray everytime he goes to the woods that he brings our boys back home safe.... God rest our dogs and keep our hunting will strong with their Legacy. She was 13 years old last March 23rd and is still around the house. All she does now is lay on the porch and occasionally babysit a pup or two. Here is a pic of her taken about two years ago. Since this pic she has started to look more like me....about 20 lbs too heavy and getting grey in the face.......... ;D
But you are right, she is the standard I compare all my other dogs to. So far, I have not owned her equal. But thats what keeps me raising a litter of pups every few years....HOPE!! She had cancer and survived, been spayed, cut numerous times, operated on a few times, stapled and sewn a bunch and is living the retired life now. But I have 5 full size photo albums full of pictures of hogs caught with her, so when she is gone and I am old (er) I can sit in a rocking chair and think about all the good times we had. And just be thankful I owned at least one good dog in my life. Dixie at about 10-11 years old. (http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt293/MarkFreddy/025_25.jpg) |
