Title: Cutter Bay's Friday night hunt
Post by: Cutter Bay Kennels on May 17, 2010, 07:22:13 am
Well, Steve and I went to the woods on Friday night.  It was the first time in a while.  After a couple of empty drops, we decided to road Ramsey, Beulah, and Beulah's pup Ira.  Ira just turned a year old.  Steve coon hunts him, but wanted to see if he would like hogs too.  Before we dropped them out to road, we reset their Garmin collars.  They struck in, and were off.  After 4.62 miles (per the Garmin), they were able to put a stop to a little boar hog.  It was a nice clear silent night, and it was a pleasure to hear the 3 dogs work the track out.  They would bog down in the swamp, then you could hear them pick it back up, and grind it out.  Towards the end, we stopped to listen to them at a gate off the highway.  Steve said, "Their caught".  Sure enough, I could hear their prey squealling at the top of his lungs.  We ran about 350 yards down a little woods road.  They had caught him about 5 yards off the road in some pine rows.  When I got their, Beulah stepped back and started baying again.  Ramsey had the back ham in her mouth refusing to let him up.  Ira had the hog by the head.  He had a firm grip on the boar.   I went in and legged him.   I told Ramsey to let go, and she did.  Ira had never seen a hog before.  I was impressed with his natural holding style.  He did a fine job on the track as well.  I will add, he has a nice "male" dog mouth.  After we took some pics, we turned the little guy loose to get back to the herd.  I look forward to turning out with Steve and Ira again.

I'm pretty sure the whole wad was running the entire race.  I think they just finally sorted this "easy" one out.  LOL!!!!!!!  If I was relying on them for my food, I still would have ate.  However, I saw bigger tracks around.  After that long of a race in 90 degree muggy heat, I would have taken the "easy" route too.  I think I killed bigger mosquitos that night.

It was actually over at Steve's club.  Good to see you getting back to the woods.  Those pups are looking good.

Glad to see you got out and gave the dogs some exercise. I was invited to go hunting last Sat am but the guy cancelled on Friday afternoon. He said his buddy had to work so we couldn't go to the lease where he has some hogs baited up and a few hogs tied to trees for me, so my potlickers can find them........ :o

So now I have to go to the regular places where the hogs are hunted regular and know how to run! Its about to get hot enough to where I don't want to go........hard on the dogs.

We killed one cottonmouth during the hunt.  Man, I hate coming across a stinking cottonmouth while hunting.  I enjoy my dogs too much to have to worry about them getting bit.  Young Ira was wobbley legged when I grabbed the hog.  IT WAS HOT OUT!!!!!!!!!  After that race, we called it a night.

Hey Josh, can you put alittle audio with those pics.  I would like to hear that race.  Those are some nice looking hounds.  Where is your club at?

My club is in St. Augustine.  Steve's is over by Lake City.  The live action audio is great.  Sounds like beautiful music if you ask me.

I agree. There is nothing like the sound of a hound.
