Title: silent hounds? Post by: hogslayer6 on May 17, 2010, 10:56:15 am how many of you guys have full blood hounds that are silent and how hard are they to come by?
Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: BIG BEN on May 17, 2010, 11:38:38 am I got one that is supposed to be 1/2plott 1/2cat but I think she is full plott, dont see any catahoula in her at all. She is silent until looking at a hog but if the hog breaks and she can still see him she opens. The odds for a full hound being silent are probily 1 in 500 or 1 in 1,000.

Post by: t.wilbanks on May 17, 2010, 11:55:14 am My cousin has a Bluetick coondog that is silent till treed. Been thinking about breeding some dogs to him and see if we can get some silent 1/2 hound hog dogs.
Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: tnhillbilly on May 17, 2010, 12:02:28 pm lucy, defenitly shows catahoula, i have or have had both, and the crosses. the markins over the eyes is a dead giveaway.
I have owned hounds for over 15 yrs, finding a totally silent full hound is very hard, some strains have more mouth than others, and of course each dog and every dog has its own personality. i have had a few of my hound / cur crosses start out opening, but learn on their own that they wont have to run them as far if they dont advertise that they are coming. and i have some hounds that think that more barking slows the game down so they can catch it, lol :D. They are out there (silent hounds) but you might have more luck finding a 6 leaf clover. Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: firemedic on May 17, 2010, 12:20:55 pm I have a half Plott, half Catahoula female that is totally silent on the track. I had a male Plott a few years ago that was 100% pure Plott from my buddy's strain going back 25 years, he was totally silent on track, but having hunted with hounds for 40 something years I've only seen maybe 3 pure hounds that were totally silent on track, they just aren't very common I reckon. Like an old man I heard say once..."Even where there's a lot of 'em, there's not many of 'em."

Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: koyote76 on May 17, 2010, 09:16:21 pm only silent hounds ive seen were crockett plotts that a bear hunter had in north carolina, they would run with other plotts that would be open and they would stay silent till the got to the bear. now crockett plotts arent your normal plotts of today, they are old line plotts that show the cur side of how the plott used to be. very gritty and not all of them are silent by no means but i never hunted with one that would just be open brawl they mgiht be open but it was a chop and not a brawl.
if you can ever find a crockett plott, get it becasue they are hard to find. Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: TexasHogDogs on May 17, 2010, 09:42:51 pm Few and Far Between!
Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: tnhillbilly on May 18, 2010, 12:40:30 am koyote, who has those crocket plotts, i would like to get my hands on a full crocket dog, i have one that is mostly crocket, but has some weems in there too. I used to have mostly crocket dogs years ago, but ended up getting rid of them all, i used to have one that was totaly silent on track and gritty as they come. i have been tryin a different strain over the past couple years but have decided to go back to the crocket line, they worked really well for me.
Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: BarrNinja on May 18, 2010, 12:56:41 am I would have to say silent hounds are pretty rare. I have only heard of silent hounds but have never personally seen one.

Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: cantexduck on May 21, 2010, 04:25:59 pm So if a hound is silent on track, but opens if the hog breaks is it still called silent??
Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: Hog Dog Mike on May 23, 2010, 09:34:52 am I guess I lucked out. The best strike dog I ever hunted with was a cross Plot and cur and he was silent on track. He would open when he was looking at the hog.
I always wanted a brindle Plot like that dog. Anyway, this Plot came up to work and they were going to haul him to the pound and I took him home. So far he is just what I wanted. I cannot complain about this dog at all. He is smart and easy to keep also. Title: Re: silent hounds? Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: So Oklahoma Cur Dogs on May 28, 2010, 10:59:20 am I just got this bluetick female out of Arkansas and have taken her out two times and she found and bayed a couple shotes both times. I would consider her pretty tight mouthed. First trip never herd a bark for a good hour then had a bay. She'll open a little if it runs. All by her self also.

Post by: Etxcntryboy on May 28, 2010, 08:07:05 pm I have a young Plott maybe 18 months old and so far she is pretty dang quiet. She don't have anymore mouth than a cur. Every now and then when the hog is running she'll bark a little, but nothing bad at all. My buddy has a BMC gyp that is way more open than her.
Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: BIG BEN on May 30, 2010, 05:54:05 pm no slient hounds to breed to. My Lucy dog in the first page of post is silent, and coming on finished pretty good. But she wont come in heat for another 5 months.Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: TieEmUpOrLeaveEm on May 31, 2010, 09:04:29 pm I have a 3/4 plott 1/4 july male if he barks you can cut the catch dog loose ;)
I got several that are real tight mouth. Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: DOEHEAD on June 01, 2010, 09:47:52 am I'm no hound man but have a black n tan that is 18mons and silent but was started with curs and all are silent. Whats yalls opinion, thinks its luck or does starting them with silent dogs help?
Title: Re: silent hounds? Post by: TieEmUpOrLeaveEm on June 01, 2010, 05:44:04 pm IMO runnin them with silent dogs help, but the mouth is still in the blood. I think alot of it is how much you allow them to bark when they are young other than hunting has alot to do with it. I hunt mostly hounds and I dont let them babble at the house or in the box. they bark when i feed them , when someone pulls up, or on a hog. It does help, But there are some hardheaded ones as any any breed. JMO
