Title: Fact or Fiction about the DOGO's
Post by: HIGHWATER KENNELS on May 19, 2010, 08:02:27 pm
Heard it from a feller that the Pure Bred Dogo's have Red mange problems, and visibility defects.  Dont know what is what about the breed, I am from La. and have never hunted or seen a Dogo in person. I am real interested in gettin one in the future and would like to know the details on health related issues that you fellers have come into with the breed  Thanks for the info...

Dogos do have skin issues.  Its not always demodex, a lot of it allergies.  Not all have it, but it is pretty common.

Having hunted with probably 30-40 dogos and being around 100's of them I've never seen one with vision problems.  They're are plenty with hearing issues.

yeah i have known of some dogos with this problem.  It is hereditary from the mom side. Not all dogos have it but I do not know the exact percentages.

the curse of white skin...I dont think well bred dogos that you can trace all 5 generations back history of hip, sight, skin, bite etc will have an issue with it...but it is probably more common in all pure white dogs. However I am no pro like Kevin, I have only owned 3.

Allergies probably but that kind of mange is passed on through the mom and if she isnt fixed then pups culled the owner should be.

I have owned 2 full blooded and a hunting partner has a 1/2 dogo 1/2 bulldog.

There is not a lot of people in FL that have them and very few actually hunt with them. The one I had had a heart murmer and died at 3. It was taken to University of Florida and was told any white dog with a pink nose can have these problems. The breeder honored a Guarantee and gave me another pup. He is healthy as can be and never any skin or hearing problem. He did have a joint problems from growing big very fast.

More than anything they are big and eat a ton. ;D

If you breed to junk ther is a good chance you are going to get junk if you are looking make sure the dam and sire have hip cert. and puppies all have a hearing test done before you buy one

kevin is the ONLY person I have met that is involved with the dogo's that when he says somethong, you can take it to the bank.  Every other person I have met in the dogo world has been money motivated, and money has a way of clouding peoples judgement with regards to breeding and culling when needed.

that said, I am sure there are plenty of people breeding dogos that have the breeds best interest at heart, I just haven't met them ;)

X2... I think Kevin had the first dogo i've ever seen, about 9 or 10 years ago. People started seeing $$$, the culls weren't culled and it all went down hill from there.

I agree Grant!

The sight problems are white dog issues not necessarily a Dogo problem

I'm not a pro by any means.  I probably cull 75% of the ones that touch my yard (born here or not).  I know what good, healthy dogos are capable of and I'm willing to lose a lot of money to try and reproduce it.

If y'all think it was money oriented before just wait.  AKC is going to allow the dogo to show in the Misc. Class now.  They are about to be mass produced and crappier than ever.

there are good ones and bad ones, as already said, do your homework and get references about the ones you are looking at, just because somebody breeds them does not make them knowledgeable. Don't think everybody out there tells the truth either.
