EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Yesterday I called all my hunting buddies and everyone had a lame excuse so I made the decision to go solo. I was hunting a new ranch, and wanted to get started early because of the heat so I got up at 2 a.m. loaded the dogs and saddled my horse, Lightning. I took two bay dogs, a help dog, and my ol catch dog Deuce. We went down to a river bottom at about 4 a.m. and turned loose. We hunted about 4 miles through the river bottom and turned around to head back towards the truck. Saw a few signs but didn't strike any hogs. Through the last gate I took the vest off of Deuce, being 300 yds. from the truck. Once I got about 150 yds. from the pickup, Tom my nine yr. old black mouth cur struck. One thing about ol Tom is if he's barking, he's looking at a hog. Not only a hog but a big one. He will catch anything under 150 lbs. Deuce was off of the leash and I didn't have an opportunity to put his vest back on so him and Mercedes headed straight to the bay, about 100 yds. away. I followed right behind on Lightning and tied him up in the creek bottom. Tom was still baying because he's been in many wars and knows to respect the big boar. That's why he's still with us after 9 yrs. I could hear Deuce and Mer fighting the big boar. The hog never squealed, not once! I proceeded with caution towards the bay. When I got there Deuce had one ear and Mercedes had the other. I legged the hog and with all my strength I finally got the hog on its back. Usually I like to break the dogs off once I get contol of the hog. Mer went ahead and turned because she has been trained to do so and her and Tom went to find the other hogs. This left Deuce and I alone with this monster. I started using hog hobbles and by the time I got all four legs hobbled, Deuce and I were wore out. Deuce got two holes punched in his shoulder and his ears cut pretty good. It's never a good idea to take the vest off the catch dog while you're hunting. With a few days rest he'll be back in form. 250 lb. with 3 in. cutters.

Good hog, do you just put your bulldog on a leash or does he ride in the saddle with you?

Great Hog

Deuce weighs about 100 lbs he generally just walks along side my horse w/o a lead, but the problem w that is when he hears a bay you can't call him back.

Man I wish it was where we could ride a horse hog hunting around here.....just too many fences and rough places....that would be fine though if we could. I used to ride a small mule coon hunting years ago, really enjoyed that too.

Heck of a deal man, its hard to handle one like that without a little help. But with some good dogs a man can accomplish things like that.... The only catch dog I have ever seen that can be totally controlled even when he hears the bay, one of my buddies owns him.. this dog will not go in to the bay unless he tells him too, and he is never on a lead.  Unreal, for a dog to have control of its emotions like that and total respect for its owner..

No I've never been told I look like Carrington.  Most people say I look like Randy Couture, but I've got a lot more hair than he does.

Hey it's 8:30 am 5/26 I just tied this hogs big brother 300 plus huge cutters caught at the same spot.  I'm currently sitting on top this hog waiting on the trailer will post pics and full story this afternoon.  Happy hunting!

Solo hog hunting can get a little like having a "tiger by the tail" when it comes to those big-uns. lol. Gotta love it!
