Title: Re: witch is better Post by: raider54 on May 29, 2010, 07:59:23 pm I notice you have three posts, which indicates you are fairly new here. Welcome, there have been probably 300 threads on here about your topic. You can search this forum and read hundreds of opinions on the subject if they havent been deleted. The truth is most opinions on here will be BIAS! and you will more than likely not find any professional opinions. You will hear from Haters and Lovers! Most guys here are great people but they are also tuff when it comes to what they like. Good Luck in search for an answer to your question.
OH Yea! AB/DOGO all the way......lol 8) Title: Re: witch is better Post by: MDowns on May 29, 2010, 08:41:16 pm Friend a game bred pit is awesome with a few drawbacks. The biggest being if it is truly a game bred pit, there is a chance at one time or another it will turn on and attack other dogs. When and if this happens, if it is truly a game bred Dog, you will never be able to break it. However it could stay cold it's whole life and you never have a problem. I know a little bit about em. Townsends CH Red Rover died on my bed at age 15, 14yrs ago.
They all work well. I have a female right now that is a great catchdog but I have to be selective with the dogs I hunt her with, and regretablly there may come a time when thats not enough. I have a couple of what I call trash pits that both catch hard too. Knew a fella that lived out in Lasalle Tx some time back that had a toothless 11 year old Irishwolf hound that'd get him a mouthful lol. As one of the fellas said earlier. You pretty much got to pick your own. I might add that I've been running dogs off and on for 25yrs and can't remember ever buying a catchdog. Use to have good luck picking them up at a animal shelter. Most my dogs are pretty rough now, so I guess you could say I make my own. Title: Re: witch is better Post by: bignasty on May 29, 2010, 08:52:38 pm classic=johnson ......hybred = johnson/standard cross but you dont mention the standard ab in your question? in the ab lines these are the performance bred dogs a hunter would have on his yard for a catch dog if it where an ab,or atleast i would....not a classic or hybred.a pit can make a fine catchdog too.
Title: Re: witch is better Post by: dub on May 29, 2010, 11:11:02 pm That is like which is better boxers or briefs? It is a matter of personal preference. With each bread there are pros and cons. Within each bread there are good and bad dogs.
My opinion pits start quicker and take less training. But I do not like their style. That does not mean anything except I do not want one. It seems AB require patients. They catch later and take more effort to train. But this is only based on why I made my choice. If all you want is a dog to put on a chain and take hunting then pick based on catching style you like. If you make the dogs part of your life then the personality matters. My dogs take turns riding with me when I run errands and play with my kids. I went with an AB cross because it fit better with me. Go hunt with some and watch them and decide what you like based on how the dog fits you and your style. Title: Re: witch is better Post by: S_J_KENNELS on May 30, 2010, 01:45:22 pm Both work and will do the job. Like the other guys said it is personal preferance. I like bigger catchdogs with leg under them. This why I like the AB and DOGO breeds more, but with that said I still like my pits and keep one around. Your the one who has to feed and hunt them. So it does not matter what we like, but rather what you want to feed and want in your dogs.
Title: Re: witch is better Post by: sfboarbuster on May 30, 2010, 03:06:38 pm I like pits, but I am biased, I don't think i have ever seen any american bulldogs or dogos catch a hog.
Title: Re: witch is better Post by: BIG BEN on May 30, 2010, 05:43:33 pm I perfer pits, theyre cheap, everywhere, and cheaper to feed. If I was an AB man I would go with Scott blood.
Title: Re: witch is better Post by: Pudge on May 30, 2010, 08:42:24 pm Good and bad in all of them. Liking what you feed is the main thing.
Title: Re: witch is better Post by: buddylee on May 30, 2010, 08:59:33 pm I have had plenty of pits and only a handful of AB's. The game bred pits seem to have better endurance and heat tolerance. Being smaller they can make a nice earring on a really big boar though. I would be nervous about a dog letting go on command because what if someone says the magic words and your not ready. Like mentioned above, hunt with both. Make sure whatever dog you choose is on that you trust with your life.
Title: Re: Let me explain Post by: Draggin Weight on May 30, 2010, 10:25:30 pm My Abs are trained personal protection trained also weight pull trained and titled in both along with show titles i know this means nothing to most hog hunters. but 2 me this translates 2 a bond with my dogs that most people dont have all the training i did my self most people in these dogs have forgotin about the orginal porpuse of these dogs. im tring to bring it back i do intend on hunting them together cause my pits have been on more hogs in the woods. i have tested all my dogs in the pen but that means nothing compared to the woods

When I finally get out of this apartment I will have both on my yard. I like the and have a truely game breed Colby pit now and I love the way she works. The only thing that I don't like is the thing that i do like if that makes any sence. I love her drive and the "no quit" what so ever in her but at the same time I hate that too. I have to watch her very close because she will go until she drops and never show signs of being hurt or trouble until it is too late. The other thing is I like her size and hate it too, she is only 38lbs and is just fearless of hogs she will catch anything! She is very very fast and can get through almost any brush in a vest faster than big dogs so that is a plus too. This does not mean she has the a$$ to hold anything where it is caught though. That is why I hate her size. So for the AB/Dogo or any other large CD I like there size because when that big boy gets bayed up you know you can cast outthat anchor and he will stay put. But they are slow and seem to get cut a little more because of it in my experiences. they do take longer to get going but they are IMHO a little less likely to turn on other dogs too. So after all that I say have the best of both and have one or more of each and cover all your bases. I know I will when I get my own yard going.
