Title: Newest prospect
Post by: Circle C on August 20, 2008, 04:15:48 pm
Just picked up this young dog today. Don't know that he has ever been on a hog, but is said to come from an older gentleman that has hunted for years, and needed to cut down on his numbers.

Now, I really don't care what a dog looks like, as long as he/she hunts. However, with all things being equal I prefer brindle dogs. I have recently either sold or given away all of my strike/bay dogs in order to start over with a clean slate. Just by sheer coincidence, each of the new dogs I have acquired happen to be brindle 8)

Here are some pics of him that we took outside the office today.

Nice lookin' dog for sure!

Why did you decide to start over? Sorry if I missed it, just interested in what you had, as opposed to what you're going for.

Noah,

We had some grittier than thou  kamikaze dogs and our hunting buddies all had stand back and bay dogs. We felt like our super rough dogs were going to get our buddies' dogs killed, so we decided to start anew. It would be different if all we ever did was hunt by ourselves, but we enjoy the camaraderie of our friends so that we never hunt by ourselves. We will still have some gritties that will put teeth on a hog (picking one up this week) and we still have Hunter the RCD. However, now we will hopefully have a dog or two that will hunt more the style of all our friends.

10-4, that makes sense... having different styles of dogs can definitely make it hard to hunt together...

Do you feel your success rate will suffer from the change?

Good looking dog!

Is he supposed to be a plott cross?

Bryant,

There might be some plott somewhere in there. Pretty sure he is just a brindle cur, but who knows for sure. ;)

Noah,

To go along with what Mandi said about our reasons for starting over... We had a pack of dogs that was capable of finding, baying, and catching hogs. However, each dog had just enough issues that we were not always pleased with them. Barking on the chase, occasional trashing, etc. They got the job done, but it was not always pretty.  There were properties that we really got good use out of our rough dogs, but having rough dogs also gives a certain urgency to get to the bay before they get torn up catching.

When we decided to start over, our intention was to get dogs that are either a clean slate, or ones that have been started and might catch a shoat or small hog, but will back up an bay any decent sized hog. Something that once bayed, you don't need to be in a hurry to get there. Basically we wanted to go with a little different style dog and maybe raise the bar a little on our expectations of our dogs.

Hoping that it works out for the best, it not, there are dogs sold every day of the week, and we will just buy some different ones and start over again. ;D

He came from Louisiana along with a few other prospects. So far he seems to have the right attitude to fit in with us, just hope he has some hunt in him.  I guess if nothing else he will make a good rug.
