Title: Electrolytes??
Post by: hoghunter7 on June 03, 2010, 08:13:45 pm
When I was in ag in school and we were showing chickens and turkeys we would add electrolytes to their water. Was wondering if anyone does this for dogs durning the summer months. I know even hunting late at night the dogs get hot n tired been wondering if I'd work for dogs.

We carry bottles of pedialyte and give the dogs some off and on during the summer hunts.

The funniest face my plott dog has ever made was one day when I gave him some powerade out of my camelbak.  We had just caught a big sow and they rolled out again and was gone for about 45 minutes and when he came up on me I was drinkin some out of my hose and he acted like he wanted some, He shook his head and started lickin his mouth like he just ate a raw persimmon....

The day before and after a summertime hunt I put a packet of Bounce Back in their Kennel water.  It is an electrolyte compound that disolves quickly.  I buy mine at Tractor Supply.  I don't know if it helps the dogs any, but I figured it sure can't hurt.

That makes a lot of sense to me.  That your dogs would need electrolyte supplements when sweating in this heat.  I run marathons.  I can tell you first hand that it makes a huge difference to runners  ...  so why not dogs.
