Title: RCD's ?
Post by: huntermand02 on June 14, 2010, 03:15:15 pm
We are fixing to have puppies and was looking for opinions on what to do W/pups. The mom is AB and the dad Dogo she is very fast to the bay and hits like a freight train! I am just tired of our bay dogs not being able to shut down the marathon runner hogs. We were thinking of keeping a few as rcd's to turn loose with the bay dogs what do ya'll think? good idea or not so much ?

That cross would typically be ideal for a lead in catch dog. People use them for both I presume.

Most folks I know with that cross either lead them in or dump them to a bay. You can try them as RCD's or get you more dogos. For my stop/rcd's I like cur or catahoula x ab or pit crosses. I am planning on running an all dogo pack soon. Maybe by grain season next year. We used to run nothing but cur x pit crosses and very rarely had a hog go very far on us. Most of the folks I talk to and hunt with still run these or rough curs to stop hogs. The hog I posted that by brother and them caught Sat. night was bayed and then caught an held by a cur dog untill more dogs got there. But this dog has caught and held 200 + pound hogs by himself before an then bayed 150 pounders that fought hard. I wished he would bay them more, but if the hog tries to break and run he catches like a bulldog and does not let go. We catch alot of hogs because of him that would other wise run to the next county.

Never had that cross myself but my thoughts are would they have the endurance and wind to keep up with the other dogs and have enough wind left to hold a hog ?

Not so much... dont take it personal, but if you were one of my friends i would say get better curs, gritty or not gritty good curs will shut down 80 to 95% of all hogs.

Then you can use that great cross like they are meant to be used as a lead in or one you can cut from 6-800 yards away if you choose. I dont care what dogo or ab you have they cant run as long as curs period. They wont die from being caught for over 30 min etc.

Keep in mind adding grit to your pack of bay dogs could cause your "loose" dogs to grow some balls. Give it a try and make your own observations is all I can reccomend.

Don't know very much about the cross but I would also suggest getting some rough curs or cats or even cur/pit cross. I have a buddy that runs the dogs I listed above and he nearly always catches the runners. Thought about going rough myself, but I like to get there and watch the bay.

On another note I lead me cd in and might be interested in trying that cross if you have any pups for sale.

I too, would like one of these pups, huntermand02. We just lost our CD on a 280 and 330 boar hunt. Sorry, all, for busting in on this thread.
