Title: Gar
Post by: aladatrot on June 17, 2010, 12:22:23 pm
Do any of you have any photos of these? I kept seeing things in the river this weekend that I thought were snakes. There were lots of them. I was told that they are Gar (which I have only seen in the Bay). Anyway, Mike said they are all over in the river and that people hunt or fish them. I was wondering if there are any Gar Hunters or Fishermen on here and if you could post some pics of the big ones.

Cheers
M

I believe those are known as aligator gar.  We have them in Florida, but not close to that size.

Matt,

I also located that pic of the okie state record, but it said that gar was actually caught by those two missouri boys at lake sam rayburn in Texas in 2005. I really like that pic of the old dude with the gar. Those things are UGLY!

Cheers

So are Gar usually shot or fished? How do you get them to come to within shooting distance? Once shot, how would you retrieve one?

Cheers

Yea usually shot with a Bow rigged up for Bow fishing, which is a Bow that has a arrow with a string connected to it and rigged to a reel. So when you shoot it you just reel it in. As far as getting them into shooting distance i dont think there is a seceret you just ride till you see them, But im def. no Pro.

I used to bow fish and got lots of gar. Some people use a rod and reel. Just get close enough for the shot. I love it when a big one pulls the boat. When they get tire pull em in. You will only lip em once with all your fingers ;D They are fun to just go out and shoot.
