Title: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: BigAinaBuilt on June 28, 2010, 02:35:50 pm I didn't want to hijack Cwards thread about educated hogs but how often have you guys had your dogs stop a hog and have other hogs come in to help? This last hunt I went on my dog had a nice sow pinned and just as I got within eyesight I heard the trees snapping and out came another sow and she T-boned my dog right off the other sow! When I was younger I found an old feedlot that at night was packed with hogs, Figuring it was an easy hunt I let my dogs out on them one night and came home with more holes in my pack then I want to talk about and not one hog!
Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: uglydog on June 28, 2010, 02:47:01 pm It seems like that would be against nature, but I have had it happen more than a few times.
We had it happen several years back when the hogs just kept coming, and coming from several different directions, the hogs rattling were louder than anything else in the woods, you could see the dogs mouths moving, but could not hear the barks coming out of their mouths, it looked a a cyclone growing bigger and bigger and everyone with us could not believe what we were seeing. It will make the hair on the nap of your neck stand on end. Never to this day have I ever seen that many hogs in one spot, one of those things I hope to see agin in my lifetime but doubt I will. Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: Rockin-P-Ranch on June 28, 2010, 02:54:57 pm Had it happen to me 3 wks ago. Had a sow caugth and was going to tie her up when a boar hog came after us. The sow was really really raisen h!!!. If it was not for my buds male bmc Jake & my bmc Tess stopping him, Im sure he would have got to us.

Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: matt_aggie04 on June 28, 2010, 03:36:40 pm I think hogs rallying is one of the best sounds ever. I can think of a couple times where I have been hunting and like uglydog said you hear a bay and then you start hearing the chatter and then the chatter starts sounding like thunder with grunts and you cant hear a thing but hogs! It is a neat feeling, one that you don't soon forget or get to hear often enough.
Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: cward on June 28, 2010, 03:47:18 pm I had a rally in the field one time its was beutiful!! I busted the rally when I got to close the dogs lined a sow out and I caught her!!The dogs left on the roll out and had bayed while I was tie the sow a baor hog hit me right in the chest how he did not cut me I never will know!! Crystal was just getting there and had the catch dog when she seen it she sent the catch dog he caught the boar in the field and had about 2 " of teeth!!
We get lots of rally's I love them!! Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: Cull Buck on June 28, 2010, 03:48:58 pm We had it happen a bunch this year during late winter and early spring. I seems like we had hogs rally on us almost every weekend for a couple months. We started rolling with as many as 4 CD's and that fixed that. If they want to keep coming in on us, we'll keep feeding them bulldogs. ;D Nothing like 4 caught bulldogs and hogs running everywhere to get you excited in the morning.

It was a cool sight to see them bunched up, just a waiting for something to try them.... Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: TexasHogDogs on June 28, 2010, 05:59:19 pm I got a cure for it !
It's called a 12 gauge Slug ! Works everytime ! Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: chainrated on June 28, 2010, 06:27:37 pm We've had them rally on us a few times and like was already said it's a beautiful noise.. Had it happen one night in a huge cotton field. My dog had a shoat caught in the middle of the field and they starting coming to him. I don't know how many it was but it's the only thing you could hear for awhile. Finally the calvary arrived and they started scattering. There was hogs of all sizes darting in and out of the rows all over the top of me. A few smaller ones ran right into me.. When it was over we only ended up catching one hog. I think it was the same shoat the dog had caught at first..
Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: Noah on June 28, 2010, 06:59:42 pm Had groups rally on us quite a few times... always wondered how far they would really go if we all just sat still and held the dogs... can be un-nerving seeing a tidal wave of swine rolling down on you! ;D
Now a boarhog is a different story... I hear a single hog breaking brush towards us... I start lookin' for a tree!! ;D Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: BigAinaBuilt on June 28, 2010, 07:32:18 pm This has nothing to do with hogs rallying but this past hunt I went on my older dogs had gone out and so it was just me and my 8 month old pup in some waist high fern. There were alot of trails going through this fern so I had a feeling there could be pigs bedded down close when I saw a down tree I jumped up on it and as I did a nice boar came out about 5 feet in front of me from under the tree! I had to check my underwear before continueing on and when the older dogs got back I tried to put him on it but we never did find him. Could've been a barr but all I know was he was big and had some dental work, I tried to get my pup to go after him but I think it ended up better for her training that she didn't as that would have been her first attempt at stopping her own hog and only the 5th pig she's seen! I'm not one to climb trees when the boars come a running but I am happy he didn't come at me as the only tree around was the one he was under.
Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: Bump on June 29, 2010, 08:58:39 am I have hogs rally up many times. It has happened 8-10 times this year alone. Most of those situations were on the same ranch. Richard and Joseph have been with me on 2 or 3 of those hunts.
I dont know if it is my midget dogs, the area, or the hogs.....but I have never had them turn back on us. Soon as the catch dogs hit...they move on. Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: levibarcus on June 29, 2010, 10:23:08 am I had some rally in the corn night before last. If I find a group of hogs on my place they usually rally. The hogs here havent been dogged that much though. The first rally I ever had, I turned my cd loose and he ran in and immediately came right back out with 3 big sows eating his butt up. All I ended up catching was a shoat.

we also get alot of rallies... one time we bayed about 25 head a few hundred yards off of a major highway out in a pasture and you could hear them rallying over the traffic...here is some pics of some rallies (http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff87/clintcp9/P1040100.jpg) (http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff87/clintcp9/P1180138.jpg) (http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff87/clintcp9/P1180141.jpg) (http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff87/clintcp9/P1240181.jpg) Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: sfboarbuster on June 29, 2010, 10:37:53 pm Good pics Clint

My most memorable experience happens to involve a big boar that almost got me while I was tying a good sow one morning. A puppy we had with us stayed with me and continued to bay while I tied the sow. I heard something coming through the woods behind me and figured it was a dog. I waited till it was closer and turned around to start scolding when I seen this big boar practically on top of me! I dove off of the sow and scrambled to a tree. That pup must have saved my bacon because he never touched me even though he was right on top of me when I dove! The pup left with the boar and the sow with my tie rope hanging off of her leg. We caught her later that morning tie rope and all, but never caught the boar.
I have seen all sizes come to rally when the dogs were bayed. I watched shoalt no more than 50 lbs knock my cousin off his feet one morning coming to rally. He will tell you it weighed 150 if you ask him though! You can bet that I look over my shoulder now a days when Im by myself tying a hog! Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: cajunl on June 30, 2010, 09:13:59 am When I am tying or dragging a live hog I always try to keep a dog nearby.
I caught a good boar hog about 125# 's on a pond island one night. After he was caught the guys with me put all the dogs on a lead and walked them back to the truck. I thought with all the commotion every hog around was gone. We start to drag the hog back to the truck and get about 100 yds. and his MUCH bigger buddy comes blowing and crashing through the sawgrass to help his buddy out. Luckily after his few bluffs and me yelling many curse words. He decided he did not want to go mano e mano with us ;D Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: chainrated on June 30, 2010, 09:41:10 am We went one night to a spot we had never been , they said noone had ever hunted it with dogs. The dogs caught a shoat in the middle of a little thick spot, I got to them and was tying the shoat and it was squealing the whole time. I heard something come crashing through the woods right in front of me and figured it was a dog, well it was about a 250lb sow and she ran right through me. Knocked me off the shoat and she was highly mad, about the time I got back to my feet and was looking for a good tree, the dogs got back over there and caught her..
Title: Re: Hogs honoring a bay Post by: hillbilly on June 30, 2010, 05:08:40 pm Have seen several rallies. Ya'll are right it is nothing like it. A big group will send some pretty good dogs back to your feet. I think it is becoming a thing of the past though with the hogs getting wilder. Heck I can't hardly even get one hog to bay up longer than a few minutes anymore.
