Title: Something to keep my dogs legged up Post by: Circle C on September 04, 2008, 09:32:08 am I try to get out and hunt a couple times a week, but the rest of the time my dogs are sitting around not getting much for exercise. Occasionally there is a full week go by that I don't get to hunt. So, with that said, I have been trying to figure out something to keep the dogs legged up.
Currently we take two dogs at a time out with the four wheeler, and exercise them in the evenings. Having 7 dogs, that takes a considerable amount of time. So I decided to get a walker that will handle 4 dogs at a time, and I can clip them then handle barn chores while the dogs are getting a workout. Here is the walker we picked up yesterday evening. I still have to level it, and run electrical to it. Gonna get a treadmill to work them during long spells of inclement weather. Seems like just making a big turn out pen would be more beneficial. Lettin' them run/fight/play is as good of a conditioning program as you can get beyond actual hunting imo.

As much as I would love to, I can't turn them out. Neighbors all around my area with show pigs for FFA, is too much of a risk for me to gamble. If I lived out in the country it would not be an issue, so much as it is here. I have not been able to come up with a better solution at this point, but I am all ears! This was another option, but I am not gonna drop that kind of money at this point. http://www.horseexerciser.com/ Even having the dogs on long cables/runs would be probably be better, but again, not an option where I live. You gotta love city codes >:( Title: Re: Something to keep my dogs legged up Post by: Noah on September 04, 2008, 02:11:11 pm I just have regular 4' horse fence(2"x4"), actually an old stud pen. Good hot wire top and bottom. I have to "break in" new dogs sometimes, especially fence climbers. I usually put a training collar on and hit em hard when they try the fence. One or two times of that, not to mention the fence hittin' them and they won't go 10' from the fence.
Eventually I'd like to make a pen out of 6' chain link with the angled "security" tops angled in all the way around. Again, with hotwire top and bottom. The hotwire pretty much eliminates any attempt to dig under, but I'd like to pour a thin vertical footer all the way around all the same. All my dogs live together like this, even the catch dogs(no intact males). They sure thrive in this "open" living arrangement, but it is certainly a liability if not contained properly. Title: Re: Something to keep my dogs legged up Post by: Mr. HG on September 04, 2008, 06:10:26 pm That looks like Mike Vick set up. Just teasing but that is what they use.Use rice hulls or old stall shaving for the track. You can get creative with that its called a jenny for dogs but you can make it work free wheeling all you need is the right teaser. Des

I was waiting on the Mike Vick comments ;D Kinda looks like paraphernalia doesn't it. Once we put these guys on it, it will certainly look like a Vick setup. a freind of mine keeps his dogs on a old horse walker with no motor they will be going round and round when you pull up to his house. if you got one dog that likes to run the others will have to go too. |
