EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

We headed out late Saturday night and got a jump pretty quick, but after a few hours of running we cut the dogs off and decided to hit another part of the property.  I knew there was a good boar in there, but was pretty sure that we were going to push them out across the road and let the fellas shoot a few or so.  Well one of my hunting partners decided that he wasn’t up for the next round so he packed on up and went to the house and we pulled off to my other spot.  I quickly got Josh and Tommy in position with their guns and I went in with 1 Cur, 2 Plotts(Puppys), and a 15lb Jagd terrier.  15 seconds after dropping the dogs I had bays going on all around me and as usual the hogs weren’t cooperating.  Instead of running across the road as I had wanted, they decided to bay right up.  So I called Josh on the phone and told him to bring his bulldog in, which has only had one solo catch and still pretty green.( I didn’t bring any of mine because we had plenty with our other hunting partner, but he had opted not to come).  As I am waiting on Josh, Tammy(my girlfriend), was at the truck operating the GPS system calls and tells me that Squirt, (Bud Goatchers Jagd ) , is bayed by himself.  I listened closely and sure enough I could hear him down in a drainage ditch that was Congo Jungle thick with vines raising all kinds of Cain .  The other dogs were off in the corn field, but the jagd wasn’t too far off the road maybe 30 yds or so.  Josh finally gets too me and we walk right up in line with Squirt and wait for a break in the hounds so we can send the bulldog to him.  Finally the hounds had a break and we sent Kajun into the unexpected.  As we waited, which seem to be an eternity, Tommy comes walking up with his .270 rifle to see if we needed any help and about that time we heard some grunting but not a squeal or anything.  Bout that time my Cur and Buds Plott Buster come by me and head in there to see whats going on and Josh has circled around the back of the thicket to get closer.  When all of sudden I heard the big dogs start yelping and the Jagd crank up like a Chainsaw followed by Josh Screaming “BAD BOAR, BRING THE GUN!”  Tommy and I quickly snuck in the vines and got to were Josh was and backed up in a washed out root system of a still standing tree was a heck of a good boar with.  Josh was holding a bleeding bulldog that was still trying to get to the hog and the Squirt was working at a tempo of three hard chops at the head then 1 shot at the jewels to make that boar sit back down.  I shined the light on the hog and told Tommy to shoot at my command and when Squirt went for his Jewels shot I gave the command and Tommy let one of those Berger Bullets fly!  After realizing that I had just been dazed by the concussion of the Boss System of his rifle I saw the boar and Jagd were gone along with all the other dogs that were booger barking this hog.  Tommy said he hit it in the head and I was seriously beginning to doubt him, when Squirt cranked up again about 150yds out in the corn field and I could tell that hog wasn’t dead at all by his bark, so Josh sent Kajun back in even though he was a bit reluctant at first and he had good reason.  This boar had cut and beat his bulldog so bad before I got there that my vest had been torn at the seams.  Josh was able to reach in and grab the vest while the bulldog was locked on and when Squirt made his Jewels shot the boar hog turned away from them and pulled loose from Kajun.  Anyway, Kajun wobbled on into the corn and we followed with caution.  After about 20 seconds or so we heard the fight and we high-tailed it to them. 
When I got to the hog, Kajun was locked on an ear with his rear-end pointing towards the stars and being bounced like a paddle ball.  Squirt was hanging on the jaw like a tic and out of nowhere Josh flies onto the back of this boar hog, like he was jumping on a horse, that was a good bit bigger than what I had seen in the ditch.  I quickly grabbed the tail and back right leg and started hollering at Josh to sink his blade, which he already had that K-Bar working like a sewing machine.  Tommy ran up and grabbed a handful too and in a matter of seconds it was over.
After the High-Fives, we inspected the hog to find out that Tommy had hit it with the Rifle, but when Squirt hit the Jewels the hog had turned its head and was barely grazed on the jaw, but the front left leg had been obliterated.  Which no doubt swung the odds in our favor, but still a beast to catch with a Green 60lb pit and 15lb Jagd terrier.  The Boar weighed in at 330lbs and the cutter that wasn’t broken was about 2.5 inches.  I am surprised that we got away with just a few staples and destroyed vest, but it is definitely one of those hunts to remember just because of the young dogs and the heart they showed.  I am a firm believer that a Jagd, if bred right, has a place in anyones pack.  Also, this was the first Blue Pit that I would feed as a Catchdog because of his brains, heart, stamina, and temperament.

VERY nice hog, and wow what a hunt. This is what's so addictive. I've done alot of things in the passed, but there is nothing like following your catch dog in to battle with a rope or a knife. Great hunt and great catch. Sid

Thanks guys. It was bound to happen. I have been hunting hard with Joey for several months now and we were due a nasty boar. We have taken about 15 hogs just on the hunts that I have been on in the last month or so. I have been real impressed with how my bulldog has handled so far in the woods. He has taken part in pretty much every catch that we have made, but had never rolled solo until about two weeks ago on a nasty little boar (about 150lbs). Always wondered how we would react to an all out whoppin. Several people have asked me why I tried so hard to get my bulldog off of the boar in the thicket. The truth is that I love that dog and when I crawled down the game trail and into the war zone it looked like he was dead. Caught on the ear and getting crushed by this monster hog. Tree to Tree, into the bank of the ditch, back into the tree. I always try to be the first one their and I could never figure out how to leg the hog. I couldnt get to his legs without crawling directly down the side of this boar hog! Tomorrow I am stopping at the sight of the bay and going to get pictures of where this hog decided to bay up. My only releif was when the hog high tailed it out of this thicket and into the corn field.  I knew then that we stood a chance at landing big nasty.
As far as the jumping on the hogs back, I really dont know. I remember coming out of the corn field and seeing how big the hog was (the largest one i have ever been a part of) and that was it. Guess the knife was in my hand and I just hopped on his back. Lookin back it seems like a pretty bad idea, but I guess its what happens to me when my brain shuts off; and im sure that ill do it agian, as it actually worked pretty good. Id like to thankJoey for the most excitement that I have ever had on a hog hunt, and Squirt for being the little terrier that did what he was bred to do. he found the hog and helped me get my bulldog out of for sure death situation. Thanks little man!

I appreciate it guys and gals, was nice to get it done with Pups for sure, but the Jagd was absolutely the highlight for me.  I guess you could just see the aggravation in that hogs eyes with Squirt.  That little dog was in his element in the thicket without a doubt.

Thanks again and ill try to work on what happens when I make it to the bay next time. Maybe we could run a shock collar on me to help keep me in check. First hog I ever caught with you almost 5 years ago the hog ran off with me and Catch. Then a week ago I thought I broke my hand on that one little boar. Now I have ridden a Russian and stayed on for the full eight seconds. I seriously doubt that youll just watch. You tend to always get at least a little part of the action. lol Thanks for the help and Ill try to return the favor if you ever decide to ride one yourself. At this point I may even be able to give you some advice on the best way to mount and dismount. I seem to have it down for the most part!!!!LOL

Thanks guys. Woke up around 6:30 am and kajun seems to be doing better. He walked all the way down the steps  on all four legs which is an improvement. Im gonna run by the vet on my way to the farm to get him some more med. for him. Once again thanks for the concern. Hey Marvin, how is that dogo of yours doin? He didnt get it very easy that night either. Hope all is well.

Great story and I wish I was there.  Thank you for taking care of my dogs and keeping them hunting while I do the oil spill thing.  Sure hope BP plugs that pipe soon, so I can come visit!!!  I sent you my hounds and a couple jags, but sent Squirt's sister Tang to Florida with a friend and Squirt's brother Einstein to Dr. Larkin DVM in Mississippi to hunt.  Mr. James Mills of Kentucky, owner of the Cumberland Pack Jagdterrier Kennels where I bought Bart, Squirt's father, was visiting Larkin in Mississippi.  Here are his comments he posted on the Jagdterrier Hunter's Forum :

"My son, Ben and I had the great privilege to hunt in Mississippi with Pat and Howard. We saw some great jagdterrier work. Goatcher's Einstein dog took a track and stayed with a hog for 7.44 miles according to the GPS. It was too hot to catch many hogs, but we did catch one at night and caught one in a trap."

As you know, I have had as many as 12 jagdterriers, but those three pups out of Bart, all from the same litter are blowing my mind.  I regret their mother, a Scott Als, Dixieland Jags x Wasabi cross got killed by a bad boar.  You had her mother and brother for a while.  So the mold was broken.

About your boar in the story - I was really surprised to see he was a big monster feral boar, I thought with all those nearly pure European wild boar you have up there, he would be (or is) a rare find.   I guess he was looking to hook-up with some sows with those funny European accents.<'

He was definitely different, but still a lot of European blood, I think in that particular area the genetics are pretty limited and I have been seeing some changes over the years in hair color and shape.

Squirt is still pretty sore sfrom that boar and has enjoyed being on the long zip line.  He has really impressed me so far and he is welcome as long as he wants to stay. ;D  I am worried about my folks not letting the puppies leave.  They are calling pretty regular to see if they have been born yet.  Should be anyday now and she looks like she swallowed a watermelon.

Ahh Parker!  I see you finally decided to chime in on this wonderful hunting board.  You need to introduce yourself on the different topic boards and enjoy the folks on here.  I have learned a lot and met some GREAT FOLKS on here as well.  I talk to some of them more than I care too, but they are still alright!LOL
