Title: New pup & a question on hog hunting
Post by: Bearkat on August 03, 2010, 07:06:23 pm
I found this site a couple months ago while looking for a Catahoula pup for my son.  We bought a femal pup from Dexter & she is great.  She is living up to what I read about Catahoulas.  She has really taken to my son, is being protective, picks up on stuff really quick, etc.  I have never hog hunted, but interested.  I like to see a do do what it was bred for.  I am really nervous that the dog could be killed which would be devistating to my boy.  Should I just let her be a pet and get another dog(s) to hunt with or can vests and collars offer adequate protection?

In my opinion if your son is really attached to the dog, I'd get another for huntin. Yes, vest/collars can help a dog to not get hurt as bad. But I've had dogs killed with a full vest and collar on. Some dogs can go for years without being killed or hurt too bad, but there's always that one situation that can get really harry and a dog can be killed/hurt.
Good luck and hope that helps a little.

I care for all my dogs and probably treat them as pets in alot of ways. My kids are also attached to the dogs. But I and the kids know that each time we go huntin thers a possibility that one or more of the dogs might not make it back. I think you have to pretty much have that mindset if your gonna start hog huntin with dogs.

i can't answer that for YOU ....  but i'll tell ye how it goes at my house , everything on the farm has a purpose , nothing or nobody lives forever , you can't truly live life until you can accept death . the earlier kids learn that the easier it is on them . sometimes its kinda rough but its the REAL world !

Depending on the maturity of your son I think you should have a talk with him about exactly what he is getting into by hunting with a dog. It doesn't matter which dog it is I would hope the feelings of care would be equal. Hog doggin isn't bowling.

X3. Do not sugar coat anything to your family about what this sport is all about. It is rough and Things can go to sh!! in a hand bag quick. I cant think of anything that would teach your son and you more respect for a animal than to see a dog and hog face off with each other.

I had to get on to my ol lady when i first got into hog hunting because she wanted to go take the dogs off the chains and play with them. I had to break it down to her that i could take five dog hunting one night and come home with nothing but collars. The best way i have found to do it is to put them on the chain and keep it set in your mind that they might get killed the next time u go hunting.
