Title: Dry Spell Ended (Literally)
Post by: Jared H. on August 08, 2010, 09:03:37 am
Took Jaylee, Cheeto and my new plott/catahoula Little Girl out  this morning.  I let them out of the truck and we walked probably 500 yards  when I see Jaylee and Little Girl pick up on a scent.  They take off in a bee line over a hill and I hear Little girl start barking.  Then I see this hog running fast through a herd of cows with my two dogs right behind him.  Cheeto is still beside me at this point because he does not like cows. Not sure what that's all about.  Anyway my other two chase him to a pond where they bay him up.  I get past the cows and Cheeto takes off to the bay.  I still can't see the bay since they are behind a bank but when Cheeto gets there I hear growling and splashing in the pond.  I get to the edge and Cheeto is locked on the hog in the middle of the pond and he is getting hammered.  The hog is slamming him and put him under water and you can hear Cheeto gasping for air.  When I see this I grab my pistol and as soon as cheeto let go and was out of the way I shot the hog.  He started sinking so I ditch my cell phone and go for a swim.  Thankfully the pond wasn't too deep so I got him out without too much trouble.  Cheeto got cut pretty bad on his leg and he's gonna be out for a few weeks.  Bad thing is I found out Little Girl is gun shy and when I shot she ran back 800 yards and got in the truck.  She's 5 yrs old but maybe it won't be too late for her to learn.  But on the bright side Jaylee is only 8 months old and she is really getting good.

Jared, its nice to see they can get it done without RL around. Hopefully Cheeto will be ready to go before too long, but if you need some extra dogs, im always ready to go. We've been on a dry spell lately, either not getting on anything or ending up with cut dogs and no hogs.

Thanks Trenton.  I think this new plott/cat female I got boosted Cheeto's confidence because he got real gritty with this hog.  I just wish I knew she was gun shy before I shot right by her.

I hear ya.  I've got a pup that's probably gonna be a RCD and if he is then a good catch dog will be next.  She barks behind a running hog but hasn't opened on a track.  This is only the second weekend I've had her and she found hogs twice last weekend but they couldn't keep em bayed.  This hog was a heck of a runner but he made the mistake of going into the pond.

Good job,  I like the silver on that hog, it makes 'em look tougher to me.

Yeah that's the first one my dogs have stopped with that much silver.  He was a healthy hog and man that sucker could run.  When I saw how fast he was running I thought for sure my dogs were gonna lose him.  I love it when they hit a pond or a river like that. Seems like my dogs can hold them better.

Thanks.  I put the dogs up after the hunt and they all seemed fine.  Went to feed them before I went to work and noticed Little Girls neck is swollen and she has a pretty good cut.  Man I'm sick for missing that yesterday.  I don't know how I missed it.
