Title: Chuffa Hog
Post by: chainrated on August 17, 2010, 01:06:06 pm
A buddy of mine had a hog tearing up one of his chuffa plots so I decided to make a quick hunt this morning and try to catch him. I found his track from last night and turned Patrick loose. I walked out of the food plot and saw where the hog had come out into a little road and started walking so I followed it a little ways and checked patrick on the gps and he had come into the road too and was about 600 yards. I went back to the 4 wheeler and headed that wayand got within about 200 yards of Pat and stopped. I saw where the hog had walked through another food plot so I checked pat again and he was about 600 yards again. Got within about 200 yards of him again and stopped and got off to look around again and Pat bayed. The hog busted and ran about 100 yards andI heard patrick try to hook up on him and then he sat down bayed .. Sent the bulldog and it was game over..

Ask him how many kills compared to how many he catches...pretty solid correlation there.

Chufa

Is a plant you plant for deer. It kind of looks like a grass. They plant it in food plots in the SE.

It's mostly just luck  :). But your chances of catching a big hog go way up if you hunt for mainly big hogs. A lot of times I won't even turn loose unless I find a big track..

Ask him how many kills compared to how many he catches...pretty solid correlation there.

 ;)  ;)

Good hog Matt.  Never hunted behind Patrick, but I like him already :)

Maybe someday we'll get a chance to make a hunt. And hopefully he won't embaress me too bad.

I can't believe some of yall don't know what chuffas are. I figured they would be big in texas. Lots of turkey hunters plant them around here for their turkeys. Hogs absolutely love them. So yeah Matt aggie. Plant you some chuffas  :D

Kevin , how are your pups?

I watched an unusually large amount of outdoor channel and hunting shows in college and that is how I know about chuffa, everytime they are hunting turkey in the SE that is all they talk about.  I don't know of anyone that plants west of the Mississippi.  I gotta plant some now just to see if I can make to grow....then I will repackage it as hog attractant and sell the fire out of it!

Most of the big clubs around here strictly plant it for their turkeys....Chufa is a bunch-grass with a peanut-like nut that grows underground and Turkeys scratch up the tubers and feed on them winter and spring. The tubers contain proteins, carbohydrates and sugars as well as oils and fibers.but the hogs love them also.....I will take some pics of some when I hunt this weekend and show yall what it looks like along with the hog sign in it  IF THE RAIN EVER STOPS......this is what it says about planting it ((( Smaller food plots are best if you’re planting in an area with no feral hogs))))) MATT AGGIE----Planting and growing chufa is a fairly simple process involving broadcasting the seed and disking them into the soil. Planting depth is 1 to 2 inches, with three or four plants per square foot. Plan on using about 45 pounds of seed per acre, with 3 or 4 plants per square foot of coverage. its pricey though around 50 bucks of seeds will only plant 1/4 of an acre.....

Turkey hunters around here spend LOTS of money on chuffas. Last year they planted about $5000 worth on 2 of the places I hunt. The hogs don't really stay on the place but pass through about once a month. They came through and wiped most of the chuffas out in a week..  There were some MAD turkey hunters around there. I got a key to all the gates after that.. :)

Good hog Matt...I sure hope these grandkids of patricks turn out half as good and him or d-man.  If ya'll are coming again this Feb. I 'll keep one for you til then.

x2 on catching the big hogs...I'd rather catch one good boar than 10 sows.   ;D
