Title: Miss you Jewels
Post by: matt_aggie04 on October 24, 2007, 03:03:49 pm
I experienced my first dog loss last night and I got to say it is no fun.  Lost my catch dog Jewels that I had gotten from Chris Windham a few months ago.  He raised her from a pup and made a really great dog out of her and I feel lucky to have gotten to hunt behind her.  Got on a boar in a nasty youpon and green vine thicket and he NEVER made a single sound, no huffing, grunting or anything.  He would simply walk with Jewels and Mike's Clifford dog hanging off and the bay dogs working him over from every angle.  He never ran or anything, just walked about 3-400 yards through that mess raking the dogs off on everything he could find.  He finally made it into a dry gully that was real open and we could see what we were up against, this was no average hog.  Mike has killed several hogs in the 400# and he said the hog was easily in that range and it was the biggest hog I have ever seen alive in the wild or in a pen.  By the time we made it to the gully Clifford was layed out in the creek and Jewels was no where to be found.  We watched helplessly as the dogs bayed him and we could do nothing.  I will never forget the size of that hog for as long as I live or the fact that a pistol will be on my hip EVERYTIME I go into the woods.  Finally started calling dogs out and working on injuries and Jewels made her way to us but she had lost too much blood and there was nothing we could do for her but make her comfortable.  I will surely miss her on the next hog, she was as good a catch dog as I could ask for.

Matt

Sorry to hear about Jewel. I was really hoping she would be around to show Rosie the ropes.

Was this hog at the gated place?

Chris

Matt, it was one of those things that you know is gonna happen... but hope it never does.

Jewels was everything you could ask for in a "perfect" catch dog. Last night she tried until she couldn't go anymore. He was just that one in a thousand hogs that wasn't gonna be caught.

I'm sorry she's gone and wish it would turned out another way.

Thanks again guys all the kind words, mean alot.  Brandy is doing so so.  I took her to the vet today to have them help me change the bandages and they found that there was in fact about a 2.5 inch cut through the plural wall and that aint a good thing.  I have her home and on antiboitics but she acts like she don't feel worth a crap right now and is breathing a little harder then I would like to see her breath.  I don't know what else to do for her.....just hope she pulls through ok, we have been through a lot together.

Update on Brandy?

She is still at the vet at A&M, they are hoping to do surgery tomorrow to close the wound.  Her lung collapsed on Friday and I took her up there on Saturday and they tapped her chest and took over a liter of air out of her chest cavity and they said she is breathing alot better.  As long as her breathing stays stable and everything looks good they should close her up and I'll be able to bring her home.  Then it will just be alot of recovery time and hopefully she will be ok.  Time will tell I guess, I just try to keep positive about it and hope she will recovery fully.  I will update again after I get her home, thanks for asking about her.

That sux...

Dogs are tougher than we give them credit. I have had two buddies that had dogs that got a lung punched. They were out for about a year but they are back in the woods now. ;)
