just got a new dog and want to get her on heart worm med. but the vet wont give me any without doing a heart worm check on her which cost more than the med...
any sugg?

Well, if the dog is a good dog and it cost you money then I would have it tested for heartworms and then put it on a program for treatment. You can find one on this site...

Depending on the age of the dog and where you live and if the dog has never been on prevention then more than like it has heartworms.

If you treat the dog yourself then the dog needs to be in a calm environment for several months after treatment. This is so that the heartworms will not break off and plug up the heart and cause a stroke or heart attack. Keeping the dog calm will allow the dogs system to slowly absorb the dead worms without any negative effects.


If the dog starts panting hard and looks like it is having complications you can break up an aspirin and feed it to him mixed in with hamburger or anything tasty. This should make him better.

I've done this several times with the aspirin and has worked. I have treated 4 or 5 dogs for heartworms without any problems.
