Had one that got his right eye knocked out by a hog at 2 after that he always caught on the left ear when head on with a hog n on the right side if he came in from behind....kept his good eye to the hog.

I talked to Phillip alittle while ago.  it was a pup he got and his house dog jumped on it and messed his eye up.  :-\

House dog would not be a house dog no more if it jumps a hog dog. Get the backhoe!

We had a pup a while back that had his eye scratched from a dog jumping on him, it turned white/blue. I was afraid he was going to be blind but it cleared up a few months later and he sees fine so maybe you will get lucky!

My husband had a rednose once that had only one eye and he used him for years with no problems.

Kevin, if you remember Little Man lost sight in his after a bad boar whooped him.  It ened up costing him his life, he would run past hogs or into them. I should have retired him.   I also had Brownie, a little pit from Matt, she was a good catch dog, but a boar cut her eye nearly out and she lost sight in it.  She had the same problem, couldnt judge distance to the hog and would break the bays. Thats the only two I've dealt with.  IMO, they should either be culled or kept for pets, no used to catch.

If it was a top dog I would breed it. Then if the pups turn out good to then you got a good dog to breed that you don't have to worry about losing in a hunt. I would try it in a more controlled environment so you can see what the dog does. My grandpa had a couple one eyed cow dogs. I asked him if they could judge distance and he said if they got too close they would not have been cow dogs for long. Some made it and some did not. To him dogs were tools so I would say only you can make the call.

Just to clarrify, Phillip got the 6mth old red pit pup from Ricky it is out of his old red pit, his yard dog(catahoula) gyp jumped on him and tore his eyeball out. Cheryl rushed him to the vet, the optic nerv and artery were both severed so they took his eye and sewed the lid shut. Unfortunate because he is such a nice little fella
