What are you guys using for tape worms?  They quit making the stuff I was using (the only decent one I know of) and the stuff at the vet is about 9 bucks a dog. 

Any good suggestions?

Safeguard, horse wormer(cheapest route I've seen).   The active ingredient is fenbendazole, the same stuff you buy for dogs.  Check the % in whatever you get for proper dosing.

I have used the safegaurd goat wormer for years and it doesnt get the tape worms.  May have to check into the horse wormer.

They make one for tape worms called Happy Jack's tapeworm expellar(?).

Most feed stores carry it around here. It's in tablet form and goes by the weight of the dog... works real good.

These actually remove and kill the tape worm instead of just expelling it.

Praziquantel is the ingredient your looking for and ordinary intestinal wormers such as Strongid, Safeguard, Nemex, Panacur, etc do not contain it.  Medications only kill tapeworms and do not prevent them.  Only prevention available is by controlling fleas.  I try to stay on top of my fleas, but I've had HECK with tapes for some reason this year.

If your getting something from your vet for $9, I would consider yourself lucky and stick with it.  The prescription medication usually used is called Drontal and I was paying right at $30 for a single dog treatment at the vet.  I've started using the over the counter version called D-Worm tabs (Tapeworm version) made by Farnam Pet Products, and it still shakes out to about $20 a treatment (5 tablets).

I just did the math on the fish tapes link you provided, Richard.  On my bottle of D-Worm, it states each tablet = 34mg and recommends 5 tablets for a dog 60 lbs or over.  34 X 5 = 170mg...same as the fish tapes forte.  Bottle of 5 = $29.99 / 5 doses = $5.99 / treatment.  Thanks for the link...I'll be ordering some of those!!!

Zimectrin Gold has the ivemectrin and Praziquantel in it. But it is deadly if you give them to much

I have been using Zimectrin Gold for 6 months and my dogs are looking better than ever .

 what is the proper dose of Zimectrin Gold ?? Can I just use it and not have to use the safegauuard and the ivermec each month?

I did a little research, and based on what I can find the Zimectrin Gold would be effective against heartworm microfilaria and tapeworms, but you would still need to use a broad-spectrum wormer such as strongid for roundworms and hookworms. 

I intend to ask my vet, but am curious as to the effects of a regular monthly treatment of praziquantel (tapeworms) vs. an as-needed treatment.

I dont use it every month just regular wormer and if i notice worms or they start to look like they need it i hit them with the zimectrin gold

I use about a dime size glob on my finger. You have to be careful because it could poison your dog

The owner of the feed store I use turned me on to the Zimectrin Gold yesterday. He says it can be use as a "one and only" wormer that will get everything. All the big kennels he sells to have switched to it.

Be careful with the dosage, about the size of peanut M&M is all you need for a 50 to 100 lb dog... once a month.

I'm going to give it try, tapeworms are giving me hell this year too.

I think I am going to give the zimectrin a try also.

Zimectrin Gold is just a brand . I am using Equimax right now and it seems to be working fine. Your looking for the ingredients Praziquantel and ivermectin they all have different percentages so just check it

How much have yall been getting the Zimectrin for?  My local store has it for 18 and change.  The fellow that runs the store is a little high sometimes, just wanting to know if that is about average.

I have been paying around $13 for it at the feed store and like Clay said dose is about the size of a dime . It should be a little more than one click on the tube for a 50 pound dog .
