Title: Catching thieves, prowlers, and Poachers with a game camera? Post by: BarrNinja on September 01, 2010, 12:51:52 pm I am looking at getting a good game camera and would like recommendations and opinions from the folks that have them.
I want one that is dependable and works well without a flash. I may use it on game one day but I am more interested in catching thieves, prowlers, and poachers with them more than anything. If anyone else has used a game camera “set” to catch a thief or a poacher, I would sure be interested in how you went about it also. Thanks! Was talking to a sherrif dep the other day and he was telling me about a man who got robbed a couple time while out of town. Well the dep suggested putting a game video camera around his house. Well the guy did it and went out of town again and wala came back home and was robbed again. He put it up in a tree about fifteen ft high and had the robber trying to get in his back door on video. Now guys in jail but last I herd they were still looking for his stuff.

Post by: matt_aggie04 on September 01, 2010, 01:56:53 pm I had some real nice young men that like to use my woods for a park pass through the other day and moon a game camera I have in plain sight on a game trail. Little does he know that I have multiple cameras in that bottom and a good pic of his face as a result. His time will come....

That way if they steal the camera you still have the image. It is easy to hide a base because there is no wire to trace.
Title: Re: Catching thieves, prowlers, and Poachers with a game camera? Post by: BIG BEN on September 01, 2010, 05:47:19 pm Atwoods has them on sell now, the moultry IR model is $99. We are thinking of doing the same on my place but we are going to build steel boxes to put them in and lag bolt them to trees and weld them on the cattle guard post so they dont walk off. I wouldnt spend alot on one it will be destroyed if they see it but in a steel box atleast you can check the memory card.
Title: Re: Catching thieves, prowlers, and Poachers with a game camera? Post by: Rockin-P-Ranch on September 01, 2010, 07:06:17 pm Ninja, I use the moultry the best one that they make. Used them to catch guys driving into the ranch after hours. It took a little doing but I got it done. Cannt argue with a plate # on a picture with date and time on it.It also comes with inter net service to send pics to a computer. Cost a little but worth it for what I was doing with it. Had 4 of them out.

Title: Re: Catching thieves, prowlers, and Poachers with a game camera? Post by: catchrcall on September 01, 2010, 07:30:13 pm i'd say put it high enough in a tree that it's hard to reach and angle it down. he might see it take his picture but he won't be able to get it.

Post by: T-Bob Parker on September 01, 2010, 07:41:12 pm They can still get to it, I did that to catch an idiot and he just shot my camera. :-\ but I recovered the sd card and got what I needed. After hurricane Rita, I installed big gawdy false cameras along with well concealed real ones at my warehouse and they took a lot of bad boys of the streets
Title: Re: Catching thieves, prowlers, and Poachers with a game camera? Post by: Rockin-P-Ranch on September 01, 2010, 07:58:14 pm T-Bob I know what you are talking about. But out in the country game cameras are the only way to go. No electric to run the cameras like you are talking about.

Its gonna be hard to beat a camera in a tree and maybe a decoy camera close by. One thing you can be sure of is I will be posting the pictures if I ever bust someone with it. I have had a few things conveniently lifted out of my garage this past year and I want to bust whoever it is. I hate to think its a neighbor or someone I know but it sure seems that way. Just certain items are missing. Its almost like they had a specific item they were after and that’s all they took. Hopefully I will catch em! Title: Re: Catching thieves, prowlers, and Poachers with a game camera? Post by: djhogdogger on September 02, 2010, 03:37:35 pm I know what you mean. We have had specific items come up missing from our garage. I also am pretty sure that it is someone who lives near us. A few months ago, my mother was staying at our house while we were out of town and my brother barrowed her vehicle, so she was at the house alone without a vehicle. She happened to be awake one night around 2am and she heard the dogs raising heck. She looked out of one of our windows and saw one of our nieghbors parked in our driveway and walking into our garage. She flipped on the light and opened the back door and asked the guy what he thought he was doing. He said that he saw someone run out of our garage and was checking it out.....Hmmmmmm. If he saw someone run out of our garage the why was he going into our garage? I can't prove anything but i think he is our thief.
Any way I was thinking about game cameras too. Thanks for the thread, lots of good info. Oh and not to mention....we were actually broke into also, but that guy was caught and we got out stuff back, unrelated to the first incident. I hadn't thought of that but leave it to a thief... Title: Re: Catching thieves, prowlers, and Poachers with a game camera? It may take a few days but he knows a few things about getting pictures of people trying to take stuff. I just lost his number so I had to call my mom to call her sister and have him call me. But it is worth the wait. I will tell you in person what he does. But there are very few people that know than he does about the subject. Title: Re: Catching thieves, prowlers, and Poachers with a game camera? Post by: Amokabs on September 04, 2010, 08:03:53 am The high end camera's with modem are the way to go if you have cell service in that area. Takes the picture, sends it to a dedicated web page, you get an email when the picture is taken. Then go to the site, punch in your password and see the photos. You could probably call the sheriff and have him down in time to pick up the trash! I pretty sure it's the same system that rancher -p was mentioning. Moultrie, i believe, i've seen em from 450$ - 550$. But worth it if you can catch em on the property
