Title: Broke Femoral Head
Post by: grittydog on October 20, 2008, 05:01:01 pm
Has anybody had a dog that has broke the Ball off the Femor at the hip joint.? I had a 6mth old pup get hit by a truck and this was the outcome. The Vet said the chances she will get back to 100% are good because of her age. I just wanted to see if anybody has had this surgery on their dog and the outcome. Thanks in Advance, JT

I had the same surgery done on my current CD AJ.  Ran over her when she was 7mnths and it snapped clean off right below the femoral head.  Prognosis was sketchy, I had 3 different surgeons look at the x-ray before deciding.  2/3 said it could be done, but both said it might interfere with the growth plate and therefore the dog may have a shorter leg once mature... not good for a working dog.

I had worked hard to get this dog and had high hopes for pups down the line so I went ahead with what the vet said would be an $800 surgery... what he meant to say was $1,400 :o  The dog had it's leg casted and had to stay inside for 3mnths, hand walking only.(thank God for my wife ;))  The dog healed perfectly and today there's no visible evidence of anything happening... and she can run like hell ;D  Another dog had the exact same surgery done the same wk, however the owner didn't control the animal and it damaged the repair.. eventually necessitating the dog to be put down.

Would I do it again?   Between the money, time, and chance of something not healing right....probably not, but if the dog is breeding quality it may be worth the risk.

Had it done on a year old Jip who took a pounding. They cut the F-Head off, wrapped the tendon around the bone, secured it somehow and sewed her back together. The end result is a dog who can still hunt but does not have the stamina she used to. About 2 hours is her max now. After that, she is slow and obviously in discomfort.

If I had to do it again, I would not do the surgery on a cur dog. If your talking about a catch dog, who does not have to run much, I think that I would get the surgery.

Yeah she has a breeding quality bloodline this is the second set of dogs for me. The first two dogs I got were 100% S$#@ Eaters, so that was a year wasted and when I selected the one that that got hurt, I paid good money for her and  I also have a male that is 11 weeks that was bought  to line breed with my gyp. I would not want to  breed either one of them If they didn't prove themselves and now this. Kinda complicated things. I know at a very young age she will bay a small hog and you had to pull her out of the pen to get her to stop. I have a few days to decide what I will do. Thanks for the replies, it always help to hear how other have done with the same problems.

When I look back on how many dogs I could have bought with the $1400 I spent on vetting... ask the vet TOTAL price before you make the call ;)

Know a boy that got his dog's hip repaired, it ain't cheap but if the dog's a good one then it's worth it in the long run
