Title: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: Outback Catahoulas Austra on September 26, 2010, 08:21:10 pm Went for a run this morning & managed 8 nice boars. Started hunting about 6.30am & drove out the gate @ 10am.
Left the experienced Catahoulas at home. Took 3 of my young ones (Bo-Jo-Ness) & my mate brought one of his young Cats (Toby=litter mate to Jo) & his old holder(catch dog) "Mace" (LabxRottyxMastiff). Which turns out to be probably his last hunt as he has come home with a broken lower jaw. He got bitten by the last boar & broke it through from behind his canines forward :( The positives out of the trip was we saw quite a few of the hit ups & it was impressing to see the young Cats pull some of these boars up. Mace is struggling with speed these days which worked out ok. By the second boar, the young dogs were finding, stopping & bailing. Then Mace would come in & lug(catch) up...The young dogs occasionally had a chew with him but bailed most of the time! Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: Mike on September 26, 2010, 08:35:44 pm Mick, welcome to ETHD. That's some good hogs and good looking leopard dogs you have.
What blood line are your catahoulas out of? Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: Outback Catahoulas Austra on September 26, 2010, 08:46:57 pm cheers fellas. Yep was a good hunt. Only a new property so we haven't even touch the surface & potential yet. We had Buffalo & Brumbies running to us out of curiosity...Was great..Going to throw a few videos up tonight on my youtube site..will post a link when done ;)
I have a few lines that been around in Australia for about 10yrs. A bit of camp-a-while & Blairs Diamond Cutter blood. I also imported a male & bitch from Florida 18mths ago.. They are mainly Cayo's Conch, Bucks & Muddy River Blood.... Looking at i,porting another gyp later next..Researching good quality lines atm....That are bred by honest cow/hog people... :) Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: LionandBoarHunter on September 26, 2010, 08:54:32 pm GOOD HUNT AND NICE LOOKIN DOGS

Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: Peachcreek on September 26, 2010, 09:17:36 pm good looking dogs and hogs. i sure like the looks of the country down under..... looks pretty open and clear it is thick as hell in my neck of the woods.
Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: Outback Catahoulas Austra on September 26, 2010, 09:26:36 pm I'm trying to get them more popular ;) ;D ;D
All jokes aside, People are starting become curious. I sell a couple of litters a year using only my best hunters & try to keep line breeding in the picture....Only improving is the goal..... A lot of people still haven't heard of a Catahoula over here, but the ones that have & have bought one & kept in touch have soon learned they are a great breed. Most come back for seconds & thirds over time! I have 10 keepers atm. Hunt usually 3 going & 1 young one at a time...The couple of my regular hunting buddies use catch dogs (luggers) but i am slowly sliding a Cat or two in there pack... ;) peachcreek - yeah, that block is very open....great for watching the dogs "hit up" Most of my other blocks ar a lot thicker than that also! Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: DubbleRDawgs on September 26, 2010, 10:30:45 pm great looking cats. you have there ..like the way they are working the hogs ..keep us posted on your breeding .. it must be nice to see them work the open country ..mine is thick so lucky to get a pic before they are caught ....

Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: Outback Catahoulas Austra on September 27, 2010, 06:47:48 pm Thanks guys. Yeah, i've some awesome black & tans but they never get too live long. The oldest one i've had is 2.5yrs. He was killed by a car & his some "Thumpa" was killed by a vet who overdosed him on anethstetic. >:( Both awesome young dogs. That black & tan in the pics is the last from that line. He's just gone a year old. He is bailing well & improves with every hunt. Jumping off the quad on scent now...
Here's a bit of video of the Boar that Mace ended up lugging & getting his jaw broken. He's doing fine & will be able to hunt again later in the year. On approach to this boar(sleeping) the young/inexperienced dogs were getting restless in the back. I told them to settle as i thought it was mob number 2 they were looking.... It was apparently this boar (i spotted just afterwards)they could smell. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2z-G7ZF3ILc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2z-G7ZF3ILc) Some of the mobs we passed up on. The aim was to put the young/inexperienced dogs onto good boars in the open to watch em pull up & get there hands around stopping big boars in the open. Most boars took em to water! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x76Ti6DBn8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x76Ti6DBn8) ;D Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: hogaholicswife on September 27, 2010, 07:25:35 pm Good looking Cats and hunt, sorry to hear about your mate's dog. Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: Outback Catahoulas Austra on September 27, 2010, 07:58:39 pm that was a awesome video... was it done with the eye glasses type of camera??? if so what brand were they ??? great job.. mine are always all over the place ...LOL Thanks- The pig bailed/caught video is from my head cam. It's a VIO POV 1.5? It just clips to my cap & i use it to record in loops. So basically continually recording & when i want to save something i hit the "TAG" button on my remote & it saves the last 5 mins. It does chew through lithium batteries though. I get about 6hrs hunt time out of 4x AA's. The mob video was using my standard Sony Hand held video camera. I used Power Director to stabilise the clip....My hands aren't the steadiest either when the excitement & adrenalin are pumping... ;D On my youtube site you can ell the difference between the headcam & hand held on some of the vids.... ;) Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: DubbleRDawgs on September 27, 2010, 09:54:41 pm thanks Mick

Must be expensive to import dogs from here in florida to there. and you guys don't have rabies right? so the dogs have to be quarintined for a while/? looking foward to seeing more video and pics from you. Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: Outback Catahoulas Austra on September 28, 2010, 07:21:38 am cool pictures, and great video, thanks for posting. No worries....enjoy sharing with people!Must be expensive to import dogs from here in florida to there. and you guys don't have rabies right? so the dogs have to be quarintined for a while/? looking foward to seeing more video and pics from you. You got it! There was 150 days waiting in USA, then another 30 days in Oz. Cost me near on $10 000 AUD per dog...I imported 2! Love the breed & aim to continually improve the lines in Oa & show the Ozzie hunter & cattle farmer how versatile good catahoula is! Currently researching a new line to import next year for mainly cattle work(farms) Will defineately keep posting future hunts ;) Title: Re: A few Aussie hogs with the Catahoulas Post by: matthewrbarnard on September 28, 2010, 10:39:42 am Great pics!
