Title: Ole Four Fingers
Post by: matt_aggie04 on November 02, 2008, 01:52:01 pm
I have had a pretty nasty cold all week so when the alarm went off at early thirty this morning I was not really wanting to get up and go hunt.  Around 6:15 I met Clay, Mike, and Chris at the gas station and we headed out to our new little hunting spot as the sun was starting to add a little color to the heavy fog that had settled in over night.  As I got out of the truck I could see in my truck tracks from last week a monster hog track that we have seen several time while riding this place that we dubbed "ole four finger" since you could lay four fingers in his track and still see track on the edge of your fingers.  We made our way around this morning and it wasn't too long we had a bay going with my Chunk dog and Chris' Lizzy dog.  Since Chris and Jony and I were still at the wheelers we headed to them and Mike and Clay were to catch up since they had went on a little walk and were on thier way back to the bikes.  We made it over a hill to find the dogs barking and circling a barn which we thought was odd but soon realized why as a 150lbs hog darted out of a opening and back in so we sent in the bulldog and cought the hog but saw two more nice boars make their escape.  We tied the sow and decided we would head in the dirction the boars went which is along a creek.  (I will fast forward here a little to keep it short)  We are riding the edge of a creek that borders a cut corn field when Mike and Clay spot some hogs on the edge of the creek and decide to walk some dogs over there to check it out.  As Mike and Clay are returning to the wheelers we see a group of hogs making a 700 yard dash across the cut corn to a block of woods.  Dogs are loaded except for Birdie as we are about to make a dash overe there to dump some dogs Mike looks back and says "look, there is Birdie"  and across the field you can see her baying a nice hog but it is a LONG ways off so Mike and Clay take off on foot and Chris, Jony and myself ride across the field and try to get ahead of where we think he is heading.  We arrive in time as the hog is just now reached a grown up fence and backs up not 30yds in front of us  :o.  Tyson is cut loose from the bike and he is getting tossed around like a rag doll and I mean this hog is PISSED.  Then in the corner of my eye I see Clifford coming and he clobbers the hog and Jugg gets there and the hog is cought but now through the fence with his backside to us.  Chris legs one leg and I barely get the other and we hold on with everything we got till Mike and Clay get there to flip the hog.  Awesome hunt with a lot of action!!! I will let yall guess the weight, till tonight then I will post it up.  Not a bad hog for one cur dog and a few bull dogs haha.  Good times fellas  8) !!  Hog had 2 3/4" and 3 1/8" teeth that were 2 1/2" around.  Chris is getting him shoulder mounted.

Awesome hunt it was awesome watching little birdie work that hog as he went across that field. I have also never seen a hog toss a 80 pound bulldog the way he did. Im sure it happens offten but not out in the open where i can watch it unfold. This hunt will be remembered for a long time. It was a blast Chris, Mike, Matt and Jony never a boring hunt when you have all your friends together for a hog hunt.

Toothless, you may be right about "tiny"  we are gonna have to get together when I am up there next time.  Might have to take a stab at him after deer season is over with.  But if I see any mule tracks on my place after I show you where it is at then ole Charlie will be mine j/k  ;D.

Good hog, guys!

I like the pic with the homeowners.  The two fingers she has on the ear is priceless!  You guys keep that up, and they're going to start cancelling tee-times and tennis to come along!  What a great, positive showing of the sport you all are representing!

Mike, Matt, Clay - Good times today. When I think back on the hunt, I can't think of what part I liked the most. Baying the hogs in the barn, running down two boars on the wheeler and mule, seeing Birdy working that big boar, or the special olympics race ;D

Catching this hog was bitter sweet. We have been pursuing this boar for the past 4 trips, and while I wanted to catch him, knowing he is no longer out there in that block of woods is a bit of a bummer. This hog in the forest might have been a good candidate for barring, but that was not an option on this property. There are plenty of other good hogs that we have seen and/or seen signs of on this property, just nothing of this caliber, yet!

Clay,
thanks again for caping him out for me. The hog is now at the taxidermist, and should be ready to hang on my office wall by February.

Krystal,

I am working on that serious look, Mike has it perfected, I just wanted to see if I was capable of being a serious hog hunter. You're damn right I was smiling on the inside. ;)

Des,

We are not showing off, we just told the dogs before we turned them out that we did not want them to find a pin butted hog, we needed something with some mASS to it ;D

Bryant,

There is no question, this lady is hooked. She has been on every hunt with us, gone to every bay, and then offers us cold beverages when the hunt is over. Her husband does not care to go, but is appreciative that the hogs numbers are being reduced.

Here is a picture that was taken moments before Birdy came into view with ole four fingers. The red hog in the front is a pretty good sized hog.

For those that have not seen this picture before, this is the damage that four fingers has been doing.

Circle C don't think there isn't one or two more boars in there as big if not bigger.Don't get caught with your pants down I have caught big hogs then the other good hogs realize the big hog yall caught has left his territory the next biggest steps up and defends his girls.Thats happens all the time on the ranch  some times the other boars stay about 1/4 to 1/2 mile away and keeps trying to beat Mr Big just like other males then when he leaves the fight for dominace takes place all over again. The biggest and baddest wins.Good luck keepem coming.

I agree.  If you pull a good boar out, another boar fills the spot.  But I'm still thinking about the age on Ol 4 Fingers, I dont think the new boar to fill his spot will be as destinctive because of a younger age.  Ol 4 Fingers looked like a real old hog.

Josh,

This is the best picture I have of his mouth. I do not know how to age a hog, so I am not sure if this picture means anything at all, but here it is anyway.

Scott,

you mean you've never caught a 500# hog? I thought everyone had seen and either shot or caught a 500# hog, its the ones with the 8" teeth that are rare :o

I think I am going to start doing guided hunts for 500# hogs, the fee schedule will be as follows.  $2500.00 cash up front, no kill fee. If we do not catch a big one, I will refund 100.00 ;D

Guys,

The 500# hogs are all in Louisiana, and so are the dogs that can catch them! :)  Be careful what you wish for, if that big boar my buddy and me caught would have had any teeth, he most likely would have killed everything we had and then some.

Mike,

My buddy just called me and he has his son on camera w/teeth, big teeth!  I am going by the firestation to pick up the pics and hopefully I will be able to scan them in and post them.  I bayed him last week, and he crossed in front of us.  2.5 hours later bayed him up again with a group of sows and pigs in some chest high johnson bahia grass.  Dogs dont do well in that terrain and he and the rest of them got away again.  He isnt as big, but man he sure looks like one bad mofo!

I think we have bigger hogs because we have fewer hogs so there is less competition for food, bigger and thicker places for them to hide, and less hog hunters.  I have seen a good number of 500+ hogs, biggest that was weighed went 522lb (intact boar.)  We could never catch him, he finally was shot.  Then I have seen a few pics of some that claimed to be around that size as well.  I have also seen a 630lb Barr that they had to shoot because the dogs couldnt catch him.

Joey

Talk to Mandi about Gray, I don't care if you take him, but first I am gonna send you a roping dummy so that you can practice a little more. Ole Gray will turn them, but you gotta catch them first. ;D

Yeah mandi your right they are on your string but every once in a while we can let chris use them to boost his self esteem and hunting hopes!!! Chris your welcome to come work the chute while we rope anytime you want. But dont forget to bring the dummy so you can practice while we rope. Also cactus ropes sells a cute kid rope that would be suitable. :P :P :P :P ;D
