Title: catch dog Post by: hogdoggintexas on November 06, 2008, 09:15:52 am how late is to late to start a AB the dog is 3 1/2 and never seen a hog and i have not got him yet but hes free and a good looking dog but i dont know if its too late to start him

I have had problems with dogs that start to early. JMO

i started my male late when he was about 2, and now he'll even find hogs hisself sometimes, id definately give him a shot. Title: Re: catch dog Post by: Jeff on November 07, 2008, 07:30:56 pm it's never too late to start a catch dog. if they were born with enough prey drive to catch a hog, they always have it. catching is not something you can train - they just do it, although sometimes a dog takes a little longer for the switch to click. if he doesnt catch right away, get a baydog in there with him to excite him. if that doesnt work, leg a pig and get it squealing. the squeal really gets them going.

She'd never seen a hog...took her to get her first look, and she damn near pulled my arm out of socket trying to get to the hog. Needless to say she caught that one. Didn't have to learn what a bay was either. Dogs were barking and she told me in no uncertain terms, she wanted to go. Point is, a mature bulldog should figure out what to do quick, fast and in a hurry.
