dose anyone notice that the black and tan catahoulas are usually rougher than the colered ones or is it just my excperiance. Had three so far that are almost rcd but the colered ones i have had wern't as rough just curious.

That is because if you study the breed of dogs the black and the black and tan is where
the  breed began I have several along with my YBM but I use my dogs 5 days a week
to find and track cattle and they know how to work either or But back to the breed they are the ultimate
breed for an all  around dog .

I have only been breeding Cats for a few years, BUT - there does seem to be pattern appearing that heads towards your comment. Another thing i am noticing, slim/pointier noses scent better on the ground & the broader nosed type better off the truck or bike! Will be an interesting thread!  ;D

I had a black and tan cat once. was scared to death of everything. wouldn't bark at anything. She did kill a skunk once without gettin' sprayed. but other then that never had her sink a tooth into anything.

they're kinda 50/50 around here... my buddy has got a male that's not ruff at all and i know another fellow that has a couple that you could use for catch dogs...

i have 4 black and tans and 3 out of 4 of them will catch and have ben really gritty since they were puppies. whats (RCD)

I don't know about black and tans being any rougher than any other color dog but I do know that if my dog had 10 puppies and 5 were black and tan there would be no question as to which ones I would keep..
It's not that I just started out liking that color it's that that color made me like it..

i cant say black & tans are always rougher, i have kinda joked about the fact that if you only kept the black & tans, instead of the colored dogs, you might get a higher percentage of good ones. might be some truth in it, but i think my perception of em has more to do with having seen and owned so many big pretty loud colored dogs that were completely worthless. one of the best dogs i ever had (cow dogs) was a black & tan out of some plain old "leopard dogs" we had for years, and i've had some sorry black & tans out of some supposedly good lines of registered catahoulas that were timid, pea hearted, and absolutely not rough. i think it has more to do with the particular dog, and his lineage, than his color. i also think that like horses or any other  animal that may have "color", to many people have bred for looks and not enough for ability.

ill sencond that sc wild hog ive got buddies that have black and tan cats thatare pussies but ve got a patch work puppy 11 monts and he can be considered a rcd catches everytime on the ear after my first cd gets there if theres no ear hes on the tail

     If somebody rings me wanting to buy or inquire about a pup/dog, if (requested) "Glass eye" or spotted coat is mentioned in the first couple of minutes - my response is - sorry i have nothing available at this time!  :P
