Title: Educating hogs ? Post by: buddylee on November 22, 2010, 06:20:07 pm On a hunt this past summer, a hog broke bay and my Cat trailed after barking a little on track. My hunting partner was complaining that my dog was teaching the hog to run. I immediately responded that she wasn't teaching anything as the hog was already headed north. I wanted to say that his nipping bay dog was really educating the hog about breaking bay and running. (his dog won't trail)
My question for ya'll is my dog really teaching a hog to run by barking a little after the hog breaks bay or is the nipping by his dog teaching the hog to run ? My thought is that anytime a hog breaks bay he or she is learning that running usually extends their life. ***Please don't turn it into an arguement about rough or bay. Not about that. Its the dog that nipped at the hog while it was bayed that made him break. The dog opening after the bay broke has nothing to do with educating the hog at all. The dog that was nipping is the one educating the hog to run. I know if someone was hitting me(nipping dog) Im going to do something(thus the hog running). Its very simple

I have a friend that says my dog is pushing it further than if he were trailing. I think most hogs have been dogged enough to know that once its been jumped thats its gonna keep on running till it has to stop and fight. I don't mind it cause most of the time it keeps the other dogs going to him that might not have smelled the hog or been at the bay. He doesn't run open the whole time, just when he can see it...

Post by: Reuben on November 22, 2010, 07:10:31 pm The perfect bay dog would be one that bays loose but puts all kind of teeth on a hog to stop it and when the hog is stopped to bay loose again. When hogs are dogged bad it doesn't matter if the dog bays loose or if it is rough the hog will run. This is what I call educated hogs. The more they get away the smarter they get.
We just need to breed rough dogs that have a lot of nose and will stay on the track untill they catch the hog. Title: Re: Educating hogs ?
